Does Your Better Half Appreciate Blu Ray?

I am sitting here watching an SD DVD 4:3 ratio version of Ladder 49 with the
GF and she turns and says to me, " See how good this movie looks? It's every bit as good as Blu Ray. I really don't see a difference and I would never buy a Blu Ray player ".

So, after I picked up my jaw in disbelief, here I am venting my amazement.

I am wondering how many people have this same opinion? A co-worker told me his GF says the exact same thing.

(To soften the blow though, she did sing the praises of my 60' Pioneer Kuro. :p)

But when show people the difference between SD and Blu Ray. They all leave wanting Blu Ray players and a Projector.:D

Never had one person say they couldn't tell the difference..

Darla, something is wrong with her; I understand people that have trouble hearing differences in sound from different systems, but even my wife will see how better an HD picture looks compared to standard. I feel sorry for you ;)

I am thinking that maybe she is just impressed with the Kuro. (Everything looks good on it) I don't know but I remember another co -worker (a female) bought a Panasonic (I think) Blu-Ray HT in a box get up and she really doesn't see the difference in PQ either. maybe it's a chick thing. Personally I think they are insane.

    Yes, she appreciates it.

The biggest downfall is, she recently found out they have hockey in HD...my favorite.

Most women are this way. They just want the story, not the effects and could care less on how it looks.

My wife loves Blu Ray, for the picture and the sound. I can't understand how your gf can't tell the difference - especially on a 60" tv!

My wife could care less about Blu-Ray or HDTV. We get all the local channels in both SD and HD, yet she is always watching the SD channels.

To some people it's just not really an issue. Some people don't even understand why you'd need anything that looked better than a SD DVD. It doesn't really make that huge of a difference in my opinion. It does look better...but it's not like watching movies for the first time again or anything. I'll get a Blu-ray player in like 3 years when I can get a really good one for like 200 bucks.

My wife loves HDTV as do I. But we were expecting tonns more when we watched our first BR movie. So she does appreciate HD content just not to the extent of all the HOOPLAH(sp?) that BR has

Exactly, I'm still perfectly content with my SD DVD player, and my crappy CRT TV. Looks just fine to me. I still probably watch more VHS than DVD for that matter. Audio quality is more important to me, the main reasoning I'd have if I ever bought a BR would be for the sound codecs more so than the picture quality.

My wife is like "whatever". She doesn't think HD is better or Blu ray. She is happy to watch and get the experience. She mostly doesn't like the Surround sound. She is cool with watching movies in our bedroom on a DVD player running directly to a HD Sharp Aq 45 inch LCD on the wall. She thinks it sounds fine and the picture is great.
You already know how I feel about all that.

It doesn't really make that huge of a difference in my opinion.

I agree. Initially, I was impressed, but the PQ is just different, not necessarily better, IMO. It's analogous to the old DTS vs. DD debate. Some of us preferred DD.

My wife could care less. On a similar note, I recently tried to explain to her why I needed three more HT subwoofers, but she didn't go for it.:(
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

My girlfriend seems to like BRs. However, for comedies and such, she really doesn't seem to care (neither do I for that matter). However, for a comparison, i ran Batman Beings (HD-DVD) on my LG and her SD copy of the same movie on my PS3 at the same time, difference was night and day for her.

So, I'd say get the movies you like on BR and let her have the SD copies of her chick flicks (saves you money anyways ;) )

My GF thought BD was better, until she saw the price of BD movies and noticed they wanted a dollar more per movie to rent them. She then decided that it didn't look enough better to justify the price. We just don't discuss the HT, because she just doesn't get it. Now 2 ch music, she's all onboard with and I could drop a couple of grand on a new piece of gear and she would be all good with it.

I got an experience. I have a old set of Klipsch KG3.5's that I don't use. I was board one day and decided to listen to them. I hooked them up and sat down to some tunes. My wife comes into the room and comments on the sound quality. She says " They sound great they sound BETTER then your other speakers"....I almost wanted to kill her . She liked the Horn loaded sound. I'm not a big fan. They are nice sounding but not even close or in the same league as my Dyn's.

    My 2 cents:

I certainly can se how someone might say "The Blu-Ray picture is MARGINALY better than an upconverted DVD, and therefore not worth the extra money." Got it, and I wouldn't argue the point.

My wife doesn't mind that we have Blu-Ray and only a 1080i TV - we don't see much of a difference from Blu-Ray with a well-mastered DVD (e.g. Superbit). Thats the truth. What will be nice is when we upgrade to a 1080p TV - the difference will be significant. Is it worth the price? Debatable. Thats a preferential decision, like all others.

I dont think my wife really cares one way or another, i think she says it looks great just to humor me....the blu ray pic for me is somewhat better..if I didnt get my blu ray on black friday for 130.00 i probably wouldnt have one. a good quality dvd is ok with me.....like everyone else on here the sound does it for me. i think 500 bucks is better spent on audio than video..thats just my opinion. im happy with my 1080i Panasonic plasma.;)

I had a 36 inch CRT TV when DVD came out. My girlfriend hated the black bars on the top and bottom of the sreen so badly that she refused to watch a movie unless it was VHS and "formatted to fit your TV screen". Of coarse I had to rent all the movies and I liked DVD so she had a screaming fit everytime I rented DVD instead of VHS.
Her **** is still sitting in rural South Georgia watching VHS on CRT while I'm watching BluRay on my Fiddy inch in Las Vegas. HhHAhahahahAhaha

My wife has never commented on better picture with Blu-ray. Of course, my front projector is only 720p, so I’m not getting the full effect.

To be honest, I’m not overwhelmed by the improvement myself, on my 100” 720p display. It is an improvement over SD DVD, but nothing like the improvement of going from SD TV to HD TV. Maybe if my display were 1080p, I’d have a different opinion.

It is a better picture and IMO should be noticeable, but you guys are right. It doesn't blow you away over the SD version enough to where that average layperson would say Holy Bejeezus. I liked HD-DVD myself and was sad to see it go. I am just wondering what this portends for Blu Ray as a format. Does it have a lasting future?
