McIntosh 4 vs. 8 Ohm Output Rating

Can anyone tell me why McIntosh rates the same wpc output for 8 as well as 4 Ohms (frome what I can tell) where all other amps increase the power for 4 or 2 Ohms. Thanks

Most McIntosh amps use autoformers, similar to what you would see on a tube amp.

One advantage to autoformers is increased stability while driving difficult speakers. Most autoformer models can drive 2 or even 1 ohm speakers without a problem.

I believe McIntosh is the only company using them due to patents or some thing like that. If you try this link, there is a pretty good explanation on the purpose of the autoformer.
