I have the Yamaha RX-V663 and would like to run 4-speakers on the second zone, 2 in the living room and 2 on the deck. Can I just hook them all up to the 2 outputs or will this cause problems and are there any other options.

Thanks-

Do you wish to reuse the front speakers from a Home Theater HT setup for the 2 in the living room? If so you could just add the 2 on the deck to the zone B on the receiver. While the living room is listening in a "Stereo" or 2 channel mode for the living room speaker off the front speaker terminals.

Hope that helps. Or explain your setup a little better for us old guys. ;)

I would use a simple speaker selector box between the zone 2 outputs and the 2 pair of speakers. These boxes have impedance protection so that you don't overdrive your receiver, and also have the benefit of allowing you to switch each pair on or off independently.

Something like this would be sufficient. Niles and Adcom make more upscale versions.

My receiver which is located in my downstairs den has a zone 2 that can play from a separate source. I would like to have speakers in my up stairs living room and on my deck running of the 2 channel zone 2 for music when entertaining.

If both sets of speakers are 8 ohms, you should be able to do that without issues.

But if 8 ohms running them together off the "Zone B" output is a 4 ohm load... Maybe not a good thing to do. If that the case I like Adams idea of speaker switch box as these would add some resistance to help the receiver "See" a 8 ohm load at all times.

4 ohms shouldn't be an issue on most any modern amp. Increasing the resistance will just reduce his amp power.

    You're welcome.

Also, if you haven't bought speaker wire yet, HTD has good quality in-wall speaker wire for a good price. I've used both the 2 and 4 conductor 14 awg at a friend's house.

Another tip - you could run 4 conductor wire from the receiver to a convenient spot upstairs and locate the speaker selector there. Then, run wire for each pair from there. This would allow you to select the living room and deck speakers without going downstairs.

Being able to switch the living room and deck speakers on or off independently is reason enough to use a selector box. For example, you would not want your deck speakers on if you're not outside.
