Hi,

I just bought a pare of used Polk Audio Monitor Series speakers. All of the stickers etc... have been removed. How can I find out which model they are?

They have a redish wood grain color to the outside of the box, they have a silver tweeter, they have two mid range speakers and a 10" woofer.

THanks.

    Monitor 10?
I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

If they are a monitor 10, are they a descent speaker worth keeping as a collector?

    Thanks.

    I wish I had a digital camera.

They are in mint condition. All drivers intact with no blemishes. The finish on the speakers is excellent as well. The only problem is one of the posts is damaged but I was able to take the positive wire to it and it works like a charm.

They do sound a bit over the top with the mid range. The bass is killer and the highs are very crisp.

I'll see if I can get them posted some how.

Do you think they are worth $70 or should I have waited for a SDA pair?

    Thanks.

Thanks Ben62670. I never really new what a polk audio speaker sounded like until I picked these up. Wow, they are very nice. Like I said, they're a bit heavy on the mid range but a bit of eqing fixed that. The low end is amazing from a 10" woofer and the high's as crisp as can be.

That woofer isn't even a speaker. It is a passive radiator;) Stick around and get your learn on.

I spent $80 of my first Polks, a pair of Monitor 7s, and when I listened to them I found out what the all the fuss is about, just like you did.

I've been trying to strike a deal with a seller locally with a pair of Monitor 10s with peerless tweeters that he wants $250 for the pair, and they are tempting at that price.

You got a good deal for those Monitor 10s.

    Welcome!

I had no clue what I was buying. Thanks guy's. Love them a lot..... The funny thing is that this guy would have taken $20 bucks but he was jobless (moving to Florida) and I felt bad so I offered $70 to help him out.

    Hey guy's,

Do these speakers have a protection system? I was playing them at a very high volume when the highs cut out. Not sure if it was the receiver or the speakers. When I brought the volume down a couple of notches, the highs kicked back in.

    Thanks.

They have a protection system called a polyswitch. It protects the tweeter when it gets too much juice and cuts out, but you already know that. :D It's a pretty good system, but the more it happens, the easier it happens. If you ever need to replace them because they are tripping to easy, just call Polk CS and they'll send you some for free. Welcome and glad you're liking the speakers.

Does anyone have manuals on these? I'm looking to find out what the best placement is for them. I read somewhere that they need to be on the floor? Can I use a speaker stand with spikes or will that take away from the speaker?

    Your help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Monitor 10s are they? Off the floor about a foot, ideally tipped back a bit. Keep 'em out of the corners and away from back walls, and toe 'em in a bit. You'll get the best that they're capable of.

Only a foot off the floor? Is there a reason that they need to be so close to the floor? Also why do they need to be far away from teh corners and back walls?

    Thanks.

A foot off the floor is plenty with a slight tip back like Mhardy pointed out. If they are too high you will most likely lose bass. If they are close to the walls you will get reflections in the mid to upper frequencies, and may corner load the bass.

They won't have much depth to the "soundstage" (not a term that was much used in hi-fi in the olden days) if they're too close to back or side walls.

The LF will be unpleasantly phat and poorly defined if they're smack dab on the floor (or in corners, as pointed out in the penultimate post).

welcome to club polk - you've got some nice speakers there.........congrats

The original stands for them put them about 8" off the floor tipped back 5degrees.
This is their best setup for stereo listenning.

That's a killer deal on Monitor 10's. I've been looking into getting a pair of vintage Monitors myself lately. I'm kinda leaning towards the 7's though myself.

Enjoy the speakers, and welcome to Club Polk.

The tweeter protection kicked in for the following reasons. Either the polyswitches are worn or your power source is clipping.......or both.

I just picked up a pair of mint 7c's with stands for 100 bucks and they sound terrific. I did a fair amount of research on them and found nothing but good reviews and the only con being a lack of bass. I find the bass to be pleanty, however. The bass is very tight and pleasing. If I want extra bass to rattle the windows or irritate the neighbors, I can always turn up my subwoofer. I wish I couldve gotten a pair of Monitor 10's, but too many people complained of the overpowering bass in them. I am very happy with my decision, and with the money thats left over in my pocket.
    AVR - Yamaha Aventage RX-A800
    Amps - B&K Components ST2140 (for mains) and Parasound HCA-1000A (bi-amping center)
    Mains - RT1000i Towers
    Center - CS400i
    Sub - BIC Acoustech PL200

My neighbors listen to very good music, whether they like it or not

Thanks, I found my new favorite website for audio advice. So many of these forums are giving me knowledge to get the most out of my HT system.

Joko, one of the most immediate and satisfying improvements that you can do on those is order a pair of new tweeters directly from Polk, if you tell them you're a forum member they'll sell them to you for $48.00 shipped (each) My Mon 10As are older and have a fuse for tweeter protection and if I ever get around to it, I'm going to remove the "polyswitch" in my other Polks and install fuses in them too. Good buy and good luck!!:)
