How are the R300 as surround (side)?
Fry's (B&M only I believe) is having a sale on the R300 - $100/pair. I was wondering if these would be good for my sides with pairing the RTi8 as the fronts. I was planning on getting four RTi8 (two for the front and two for the side) when Fry's has them on sale again for $298/pair but if the R300 works well with the RTi8 (or RTi A5) as the fronts, I can save $200. Your thoughts please.

You'd be better off waiting and saving up for some more RTi series speakers. Those speakers aren't timbre matched to the RTi A series, so they probably wouldn't blend very well. If you're not a real critical listener, you might be able to get away with it. You'd have a much cleaner soundfield with all RTi's though.

I have r50's which work great for surrounds with mu rti10's....after all it is surrounds were talking about. Not fronts. Get them and test them out. If you don't like then take them back...at that price you can't beat them for what they do.Retired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)

I have to agree with Kchill on this one. I had a set of these as part of my original seperates home theater system and used them as rear surrounds. At first I used them with a set of R50s as fronts, than some Monitor 70s as fronts, and later with some RTi 8s as fronts. It sounded good as a sorround or rear sorround with all of them. I also bought my R300s from Frys when they had the same sort of deal going. For that price they are hard to beat. Will they sound as good as some FX series surrounds with the RTi8s? No, they will not, but they will work just fine in the meantime until you can get what you want. Who knows, you may like them enough to call it good and leave them in. If not you'll have a spair set to use in case anything ever happens with your other speakers.

I have read (and I can't seem to find it now) that matching sides speakers to the fronts are good if using it to listen to music (matching timbre). Since the speakers will be 99% used for movies, I would have thought that mixing the surround with fronts would be okay.
comfortablycurt said speakers should match and now Kchill and Dawgfish said it doesn't need to be. I guess in the end, it is subjective.
