Can anyone define "defelate"??? (pronouced, as far as I can tell, as 'DEF-oh-lay") It is used many times in Saving Private Ryan to describe geography.. positions.. etc.. but I can't find a definition. It is used on the initial Omaha Beach scene.. "that bomb crater provides perfect defelate", for example. It is used again for sure at the end in the town when they're fighting the tanks.

I've searched, and the only hits I get are the SPR script or foreign language sites.

Thanks.

Gotta ask... and an admission here... I think SPR brings a tear to my eye every time I see it, during the "current" scenes where Ryan is the old man at the cemetary. I've heard SPR described as a real man's 'chick flick'... I love the battle scenes... but I'll admit the emotion of the whole thing gets to me. If reincarnation is true, and I'm on at least the second time around, I know I was a soldier in WWII.... I'd like to think a fighter pilot, but who knows...

The only other movie that gets to me that way is Field of Dreams... because my father died when I was 23... before I had a chance to make money and buy him a Harley and all that stuff...

Defilade: to arrange (troops and fortifications) so that the terrain will protect them, especially from gunfire against either flank.

I agree, SPR is an emotional movie.
