Is the 'Day After Tomorrow' scenario taking place now?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28673142/

From movie:
Climatologist Dr. Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is drilling ice cores in Antarctica when a piece of the Antarctic Ice Shelf the size of Rhode Island breaks off. Jack presents his research to a conference on global warming. Jack found that ten thousand years ago, a global warming changed the earth's climate into the Ice Age. Jack said at the conference, that it could happen again in maybe 100 to 1,000 years from now if we don't stop polluting the atmosphere.' At the conference, Jack meets Professor Terry Rapson (Ian Holm) of Scotland, who is keeping track of the world's ocean currents. Terry tells Jack that the melting of the polar ice caps has poured fresh water into the oceans and diluted the salt level, which has caused the temperature of the ocean currents to drop 13 degrees. The world's climate system changes for the worst. Tokyo is hit by softball size hail; it begins to snow in New Delhi; and Los Angeles is destroyed by a group of tornadoes that hit all at the same time. Jack sees the President and gives him the bad news that his estimate of years is now down to days, before we enter a new Ice Age. Jack advises the President to evacuate everybody in the southern states to Mexico, because it is too late to evacuate the people in the northern states. Jack gets a phone call from his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has taken up refuge in the Manhattan Public Library. Jack tells him to stay inside and ride out the coming storm, because if you go outside, you will die. Jack heads for New York City to save his son. Douglas Young (the-movie-guy)

Well, luckily, according to the movie, we can just run really fast and outrun the ice.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Good one Bob. Same can be said for the lava in Volcano.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Last I heard the gulf stream is still running, so I am going to say no.

However, sun spot and solar flare activity (bet you haven't heard those terms in 20 years when they were blamed for poor satellite performance) has dropped significantly in the last year.

Ironic how much of the hype and data to support Al's global warming crusade comes during a period of elevated solar output.

Some cool scenery in that movie, but that part where they were running back and stuff was freezing right behind them was just ridiculous, could have done without that altogether. And the speech/commentary at the end by the president made me vomit in my mouth a little

Global warming happens, but man was never the cause, the sun controls the temperature. There is currently a petition in Congress with over 500 signatures from independent scientists declaring "fraud" being perpetrated by Al Gore. Remember in the 80s when he was trying to ban "dirty" music......well now he is trying to ban dirty people. There are a lot of articles on this - but they are not on CNN.

    You gotta be kidding me.

First off, for people that don't know and because BigMac is too lazy to post any info about his point, the Vostok ice core sample is a 2 mile long ice core taken out of Antartica which purportedly shows ice layers for over 400,000 years in the past. This is supposed to cover about 4 ice ages.

The claims made from the study of this ice core have very tenuous strings. Essentially, what they say, is that the AVERAGE levels of "greenhouse gases" such as methane and CO2 are drastically, sometimes 2-3 times higher now then they were at the END of ice ages.

The scientists publishing "findings" from these studies say that it is proof that we are changing things for the worst. Yet the relationship that these scientists have developed between the findings in the layers of the ice core and todays climate have almost no correlation beyond conjecture as to what the current "greenhouse gas" situation actually is.

Yes, a compelling story can be told about the ice cores and "what they mean" (dun dun duuuunnnnn!!!!) but in reality, the actual arguments based on what the ice cores show have very little credibility because of the tenuous strings holding them together. It is far to easy to punch holes in the arguments and find circular and flawed logic.

There is no doubt that pollution is a bad thing. I'm all for conservation of the environment. I like trees and birds and puppy dogs and rainbows just as much as anyone else. What I don't like is arrogant, self-important celebrities, politicians and sadly enough, scientists, relying on broken theories and flawed logic to prove arguments that they use in a personal crusade to talk down to regular people like me like we are some kind of pile of idiots all just to make themselves feel more important then they really are.

And BigMac, if you don't like my assessment of the Vostok Ice Core Samples then next time, post something yourself instead.

Don't worry, your sister will grow out of it. But there is no doubt the we are doing things to the environment. Just between oil and deforestation, we must be making an impact on the planet. But it's a tough planet and it can handle what we throw at it. But just to save a few bucks and cleaner air, there is no reason to cut back on assorted crap (except quality audio and video).

And as far as Al Gore. I just don't get it. The man is an idiot, and wins a nobel prize?!? I love how it starts ranting on how much CO2 we are spewing out, and in the background is a shot of hugh nuclear plants with "smoke" comming out of them. That's water vapor you moron! And then he says to buy carbon credits to offset your carbon use. But I don't remember him mentioning that he happens to be selling them!

By the way, if you think the picture on your tv isn't perfect, I sell these glasses that can improve the quality of your picture! But wait, there's more! For a limited time, I will send you and extra pair for free! That's right, FREE! (just pay the small postage and handling fee). All this for just $!9.99 (plust postage and handling). Not saying I agree with al gore, nor am I an expert on this, but if what they say about global warming is correct, it's not something you would just notice right away, like all of a sudden all seasons are hot. I think the average temperature only goes up a few degrees slowly- but this is supposed to have some ill effects that would normally happen over time anyway, but just way way faster. Like I said- I don't know enough to fully back the idea that it's true or not, but I dont' think the fact that winders are still cold contradicts current theories on global warming.

No, not lazy but thought I would let people make up their own minds. I think your assessment is just fine. I am no scientist so I will leave it up to them. There are valid points that were made from both sides. Only time will tell. I don't subscribe to the BS that this topic brings, I just think it is interesting. Hope the movie 2012 is better than Day After Tomorrow. The best part of this movie was the special effects imo.

I woke up to that sea smoke this morning. It was -14 in old orchard beach maine at 8:30 and driving to class was no fun :( The beach was steaming and even though there was a clear sky the ocean had a thick fog on top of it, like a big thick blanket.
