LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Nick Fury, the one-eyed director of super-spy organization S.H.I.E.L.D. who appeared on screen at the end of "Iron Man," may not return to the movies, "The Spirit" star Samuel L. Jackson told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.

"Somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won't be in it," Samuel said of Marvel Studios' upcoming slate of comic book films, which include "The First Avenger: Captain America," "Iron Man 2" and "The Avengers."

According to the Times, there's been a breakdown in negotiations for the actor to reprise his role as the secret agent - despite being used as a model for the character's comic book incarnation in recent series "The Ultimates."

"I saw Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards and we had a conversation. He said, 'I hope things are working out for you because we're writing stuff for you.' Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager and things aren't really working that well," Samuel said.

However, Marvel told the Times that talks were still on.

"Marvel does not comment on active negotiations," a rep for the studio told the paper.

Like the comic books that inspired them, the upcoming films are set to have their characters co-exist and cross over into each other's movies - an effort that's already been showcased, as Robert Downey Jr. had a cameo in character as Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, in "The Incredible Hulk."

I am jackson fan! :( I dont like major change in actor after successful movie like ironman. i like my movies with same actors in 1-2 or 3 same movies.

dont understand why iron man's ending showed jackson (nick fury) in it if they wasnt sure if they plan to bring jackson in 2nd movie...

It doesn't make sense why they didn't contract him for more since he was in the first. But, what, he was in it for 30 seconds at best. That's not enough to secure a character in a movie so replacing him will be easy with minimal damage to that character.

Thank God! Making Samuel L. Jackson into Nick Fury would be like having a blue Incredible Hulk. :)

I think Samuel L. Jackson is a pretty good actor. He was great in the Star Wars movies. He's had some pretty bad movies recently though(i.e. Snakes on a Plane).

I go against the grain as far as Iron Man goes. I just saw it for the first time a couple weeks ago, and I didn't really like it that much. It looked awesome and sounded awesome...but the story line was really lacking to me. It didn't really seem to have much depth. It was still alright...I'm sure I'll watch it again...but I wasn't completely blown away by it like I thought I was going to be. It didn't live up to my expectations at all after all the hype it's gotten.

This will only be a big deal for fans of the Ultimates comic series. Where Nick Fury clearly is Samuel L. Jackson, not only does he look just like him, he talks like him too. I am a big fan of the first two Ultimates series and would be put off if he isn't in the movies, not enough to stop me from going to see them though.

Only the people "in the know" even knew he was in the first Ironman, because they got up andleft right as the credits started. I told several attendees within ear-shot it was gonna happen, but only a couple stayed with me and my boys.

I love Samuel L., but there are several other actors that can pull off the character with ease.

A newbie, no popular actor for that role. Get a new face for it.
