This is freaking ridiculous.

http://www.clickondetroit.com/video/10235271/index.html

I wish there was a part 2 to this video that explains how a company doesn't know part of it's work force is not on the job, or loaded when they are.

Soon, our tax money will be buying the drinks. Congress and the president will give them their bailout to payback for the votes they got. No back alley politics here, it's all out front.

    just my two cents...
I built cars at the subaru plant in indiana... these guys are due the benefit of a doubt here... doing this type of work is by far the most demanding work i have ever done, physically and mentally. these men may be on a split shift or other types of positions within the plant. it is obvious to me that they may even be union shop stewards or something where they are more involved with things other than production. i do not believe that bailing out detroit serves the long term public good, but something should be done to not only strengthen the auto industry but restore manufacturing as a whole....

how does this happen? are they not clocking out, I have never been at a factory that you did not have to clock out even for lunch. I am sure it's the way it's been for years or something like that. Those guys have some balls doing that. We got away with murder on midnight shift where I worked, the boss hated being there as much as we did, and he let stuff slide as long as the work got done, but when on days, when the big wigs where there, it was a whole different ball game.

Come now. If you really meant that, Ted Kennedy would have to be first in line for the door!

Yeah, 'cause half a dozen guys are out taking extra long lunch breaks and boozing it up. That's the reason why, for sure!

I cannot vouch for the validity of the video, but if it is true, those guys should have their asses in the street with no pension/benefits whatsoever.

Hard work? 3 hours a day in a bar during their shift? BS.

Everywhere has a couple of these guys. I had a boss like that.
Anytime after 1 P.M., don't bother. Union, non-union, sales, blue
collar, etc. I had a guy in my workgroup 20 years ago that got a DWI
on the way home from work at 8 a.m. in the morning. Alkies are alkies.
They always find a way to drink. It's getting rarer to see them drinking
at long luches, but watch out at 5p.m.!

I spent many years doing business with manufacturing plants that manufactured/assembled products from automobiles to diapers. It is all over and its a major reason manufacturing in this country is in serious trouble. As a sales representative for some major manufactures I was fortunate to see products being produced. I also had the opportunity to witness first hand this behavior while entertaining customers. It's pathetic.

Why would you give them the benefit of the doubt? They lied to the reporter-Why do that unless they weren't on the up and up. If they were on a split shift-or whatever, they could just say so and tell the reporter to pound sand.

Whether or not they were actually on or off the clock is one issue, but the more serious one, IMHO, is the potential Drunk Driving. Granted we don't really know how much they were drinking, but come on 4 hours? Then the possibility that they might be operating machinery when they return to work?

I don't think its valid as an overall reflection of Ford or Unions, but who knows. I only saw, what, 4 guys? Out of how many employees? Appears to be an isolated problem and should have been brought to Ford management attention rather than a News Story-but that is the media for you.

I'd love to have seen the wive's reactions when they saw this on the news.

You don't know the situation at all. You only know what some two-bit reporter at a local news station is telling you. That expose does nothing but make the reporter look slicker than he is. Kinda like Geraldo Rivera. You also have no idea what their job at the Ford factory is. For all you know, they could be the janitors. It's hack reporting work at best and the only redeeming quality to it is the potential for drunk driving being exposed.

On top of that, everybody screaming unions suck, you also don't know if these guys are union or not. There are plenty of non-union jobs at the big three too.

I think the real problem in this country is not the unions, the politicians, the automakers or the bankers. It's the stupid, dim-witted sheeple that believe everything they see, hear and read.

Believe me, it happens a lot of places. Sales guys, service guys, union,
non-union, etc. I never have worked in a union shop. Yet, there it was.
Union just makes it harder to get rid of them. Bar flies are bar flies.

Are you talking to me? I didn't jump to any conclusions? I stated my opinion on the way the story was presented. I didn't condemn the guys.

What I did state that was obvious was that they were at the bar, yet they lied about it when questioned. The guy talking about forgetting his pager and having his wife drop it off at a bar for him? The guy working the midnight shift? etc. The interviews were live-not one sided pieced together editing room cuts. If they were then the guys and Ford would sue the news agency for slander, libel or whatever the legal terms are.

It doesn't matter what job they do. As a matter of fact it doesn't even matter that they even work for Ford or if they even work at all. The guys lied about their activities. As I said its should not have been a matter for the media but for Ford's management (if they even work for Ford).

Stop trying to read so much into what people say. You don't know me and you don't know my complete view on things.

I had a manager that was a barfly. IT took years for someone to catch up with the ****.
And worse yet, he assumed all his employees were ****
the company as bad as he was. I transfered out from under him. He was
royally pissed about it. I only spent about a year working for him, but I saw
him around for years after. What a piece of work. He even got promoted
    up to a higher level.

    Ditto that.
In 5 years that I have been in a union, I've yet to see that kind of behavior. The ones that have real problems miss a lot of work, then get laid off or fired. Usually they end up with at least one DUI, and can't get to work every day on their own. Needless to say, they don't get called to work on other jobs.

In contrast, I saw it happen a lot over the previous 15 years, in non-union shops. (many of them being management/owners)

So what does that prove? nothing, other than alcoholics will blow off work to drink.
