I set my cable box to 1080i from 720p at the direction of comcast rep.
I am using an HDMI cable.
Why would some high def. channels look worse and others look amazing. Alot of channels the picture has more detail but is grainy.

Just because a broadcast is "high-def" doesn't mean the image will look better, just 'sharper.' The way the video streams are compressed can have an effect on video quality, artifacting, ghosting, color distortion.
Usually, for sports, I like 720p over 1080i for the progressive scan; however, for non-sports, 1080i looks better because of the higher pixel count (assuming you have a 1920x1080 tv). -

Will your cable box let you pass the channel resolution through the way it was broadcast? It looks better if you don't have the box scaling and deinterlacing.
