At a local price of $229.00, I am about ready to pick this machine up and give it a run.

Anyone have one or had experience with one. It seems to be receiving very good reviews.

The only drawback is that it only has an optical out, no coax, which is what I am currently using. I can either move my receiver closer to the player, or get an optical-to-coax converter. Anyone have experience with the converters?

Peace Out~:D

For $289, the Toshiba SD-4700 is a better buy than the Panasonic. You can check out its specs on toshiba.com.
The following link to giant.com that sell the DVD, they have
the special 10% off deal, net cost $261, it's a steal. This DVD
machine performs like a winner, and it plays anything form DVD to CD, CD-R, CD-RW, video CD and even DVD-A.

    Ron-p,

I'm also looking for a new dvd player and the pan 56 progressive model was also one of my picks, and the jvc 60bk......however today i check out some prices and on some toshiba's and the prices really fits my budget....i had a look at the sd4700 and the sd5700 models and the prices where different at three places that i checked out. A local chain had the sd4700 for 456.00 and i tried a smaller a/v shop and his price was 395.00.....and the last place that i went gave me the best price of 370.00.....however, my best bet and i will probably pick up at the end of the month when the stock arrives will be the sd5700 because the price is only 20.00 more and the features are pretty good for the money ie: progressive scan, dvd audio play back, hdcd compatible and i guess it's considered their cinema series but not the top of the line which goes for a lot more. This is my own personal opinion and you should go check everything out before you make your purchase......i will be upgrading my 1600 toshiba dvd and i hopefully get the 36"sony xbr by year end.

ps. by the way the price that i have mention are in canadian dollars....and don't get me wrong panasonic do make great realiable products....ie. my vcr....have a happy shopping spree!

    dc.

Check out hometheaterhifi.com, they have a dvd shoot-out and run most of the popular players thru a battery of preformance tests. The RP-56 came out as one of the best. It also has the latest and greatest Sage Chipset, which is supposed to produce and outstanding progressive picture. Even the RP-91 still uses the older Genesis chipset. Not sure what Toshiba uses. I also do not need DVD-A, upscaling or any other bells and whistles, just a good player with a great picture and the RP-56 seems to fit.

Hey Ron, did you get a free DVD when you purchased the Pan DVD player?

Speaker, Not sure if you are really interested or not, but I dont think the SD5700 some with DTS Decoder on the Unit. It does have DD but not DTS. So unless you got the Receiver or Seperate to decode DTS then you are out of luck in that respect...

One that i have been checking out is the Panasonic DVD-RP91N and most sites have that between $450 and $700. Looks nice and according to the people raving about it, I would check this one out.

Ahhh, but don't waste the cash if you do not need DVD-A.

The JVC-XV S60 puts out an extremely identical picture to the RP91, has auto-upscaling (which is excellent), all at half the price.

I love this machine, the progressive picture is awesome.
