hey guys, looking to maybe upgrade and get some higher quality disc's. Should i go dvd-a or sacd? also is their a good player you would recommend? Also, is it really worth it upgrade, and how much better would they sound then if i bought a new cd player for my regular cd's. I was thinking of the Cambridge 740c, which is supposed to be really nice, and it has optical in's so it can be used as a external dac for other sources. Just let me know what you think.
Thanks,
lando

Get both sacd and Dvd-a. The cambridge cd player is good but why not get an universal player like Marantz or Denon?

I'm pretty sure any Universal player will play both DVD-A and SACD.
I believe there is more SACD's avail than DVD-A. I read on one or two review sites (I can't remember where) that the SACD was preferred for SQ.
Also, SACD although not always Multi-Channel, will always have a 2 channel mix. I'm not sure about DVD-A if all discs have a 2 Channel mix (but at least one or two of the ones I have did). So I guess keep that in mind depending on whether or not you using this in a multi channel system or 2 channel system.

If you're not in a rush, I believe Oppo is coming out with a new BluRay player that will play at least SACD (not sure about DVD-A).

I believe the entry level is frequently considered to be the Oppo 980, $170 shipped from amazon.com, slightly more from oppodigital.com: http://oppodigital.com/dv980h/default.asp.

The Poineer Elite DV-48AV is an excellent entry level choice currently, since it has been reduced to just $100 at Vanns.com, but it's out of stock (not surprisingly): http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/486974189.

Music Direct currently has a sale on a Marantz multi-disc player for $250, which seems like a real bargain to me, IF it's any good. If your interested in it, you'll have to get some of the gurus to elaborate on whether or not this player is better than the two mentioned above, and if so, may be the best choice of the three: http://www.musicdirect.com/product/73851

I have no idea how any of these compare to the Cambridge Audio 740C, sorry! :o

Consider that there are over 5500 SACD's and something like 800 DVD-A's and new DVD-A titles are basically non-existent.

Could the dreadfully-slow loading be due to the fact that these machines are changers? My Sony SCD-CE595 (MSRP $150.00) 5 disc SACD/CD changer takes what seems like forever to recognize the disc....not to mention sensing how many disc is in the tray. My single-disc Sony DVP-NS500V DVD/SACD/CD player seems to be a lot quicker in this respect.

At this point, and I hate to say this, DVD-A is practically dead. There're still titles trickling out, but don't expect anything major. As for SACD, it's still a relatively healthy audiophile format, especially for classical music. SACD will never be mainstream....there, I said it. Regardless, over 600 new SACD titles were released worldwide in 2008 (8 new SACD titles have been announced since the beginning of this year). Therefore, go to sa-cd.net, if you like the music available on SACD, by all mean and get a SACD-capable player.

There're at least 4 such players....the early 80G Sony PlayStation 3 and the upcoming "universal" players from Denon, ezGear, and Oppo. The ezGear player will have a MSRP of $400.00 and the Oppo will retail between $500.00 to $600.00.

I think it's the early 60gb PS3s that will do all.

All the 60GB, 20GB, and EARLY 80GB will read SACD. It's only the 40GB and the new 80GB that don't do SACD. Basically just the consoles manufactured in the last half year or so. Anything bought the first two production years had SACD playback. If you're not buying used, you're probably limited to the new universal dedicated blu-ray players...

I wouldn't look to Sony for any products that support DVD-A...
