You might have to get rid of the Linksys with Comcast, I did. My Linksys broadband router (WRT54g v5) would continuously freeze (wired or wireless) and when talking to a buddy of mine who had the same router, he stated Comcast support told him that there was a compatibility issue between the Motorola router supplied by Comcast and the Linksys. I have since switched to Belkin and my lockups have gone away.

Just FYI, I had the Linksys WRTG54g and I didn't have any problems with Comcastic in my area. I don't recall what revision it was though. If that were the case though, you could try loading a different firmware on it, like some of the open source tweaked versions out there like DD-WRT. If you were inclined to go that route and avoid buying a new one.

Thanks. I still have the Linksys packed away and might pull it out and give it a try. I have the 12 Mbps Comcast package and I have to admit that I am not at all impressed with Comcast. I see you and I are local to each other. I'm thinking of giving Verizon FIOS a shot in the spring.

I've been very pleased with my Comcast Internet connection, and also use a LinkSys router, WRT54GS, as others mentioned here. I use both wired connections and wireless. I live in the Boston area.
I really liked the fact that they just upgraded my speed at no additional charge. It went from 6MB down, 1 MB up to 12MB down, 2 MB up. I tested it as being 10.6MB down, 2.9MB up. I just had to reset my cable modem to get the increased speed!

OK, I hooked up the new modem tonight. This time I bypassed the router and I'm hooking it up directly to one of the computers. We'll see if this works. If it does, then the problem may have been communication between the router and the modem. If this is the case, how do I fix this communication problem? Can Linksys (router) Customer Service help me out or should I call Motorola (modem) or should I call Comcast???

If this works with the new modem, then hook it back up to the router as is. If it still works then it was likely an issue with the old modem. If it fails again, then look into upgrading the firmware on the router (or do that anyway but one step at a time so you can "know" what the source of a problem was). If you find a newer FW, and you continue to still have problems, perhaps it might be time to try a newer router or try the third party firmware mentione previously.
Or it may be a good excuse to look into one of the newer longer range WiFi routers.

Oh, and if all still fails, and it looks like the router is a fault source-don't forget to reset the router to factory defaults just in case there is a setting in there that could have been changed and causing issues.

I'm a FiOS fan and current customer (not really a Verizon fan though), however, one MUST keep in mind when thinking about it, even if they think it will only be for a trial run, and this is a big one, Once you go FiOS, Verizon completely disconnects the copper to the house. This means that DSL will never be an option again. So they will have completely eliminated the DSL market from ever stealing thier ISP business (yeah I know they are only reselling the DSL to other providers as the last mile provider, but still). You will only have the option of satellite or cable for an ISP. Just sumpin to keep in mind.
