Decent flick. Cruise did a decent job but the supporting cast was outstanding. I'll recommend this one if you enjoy WWII movies but it's light on the action and heavy on drama. Naturally, the ending is predictable.

Rental.

Great performances, but ultimately not that interesting to me. The story itself was intriguing, but I really felt that Bryan Singer didn't present it as well as it should've been presented. Still, Tom Cruise is good in it.

I'm a big fan of WWII stuff and have always found movies, documentaries, books, etc. about it intriguing.

This movie should have been suspenseful, interesting, and edge of your seat. However, I just never felt it. Maybe it's just that I find Tom Cruise, everything he does, and everything he exudes to be fake, overblown, and over the top (in a negative, detracting way).

If it was anyone else in that role, I probably would've liked the movie quite a bit more. At the end, when they showed a stat with something like "15 attempts were made by Germans to take the life of Hitler, this was the last," I was thinking maybe they should have done a movie about one of the other 14 that starred someone other than Cruise.

Psuedo Spoiler alert (actually, history itself is the spoiler in this one):

Also, I agree with others that if you have any past knowledge of WWII, you know Hitler wasn't killed by a bombing from an insider and his government wasn't overthrown by a coup d'etat, so you pretty much know Cruise is doing everything in vain.

Agreed... even though I haven't seen the movie.. I think Tom Cruise is way overblown. He's not that good of an actor. I will not go to a movie just because he's in it. The movie has to be good.

I think I'll rent this one.

    * potential spoiler *

The part I don't get it is: why was he (Cruise) so confident that the bomb killed Hitler? There is almost a sense that he doesn't really want to find out the truth, rushing to the next steps in the plan, without doing a due diligence of whether Hitler is indeed dead or severely injured. And also, the second explosive (spare), why it wasn't deployed inside the bag? it could easily be stuffed next to the active one, and I am sure it will be more lethal..

Still, it is a good rental.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Agreed. I at first thought Cruise's character (Staffenberg or whatever) wasn't real convinced he had killed Hitler but talking it up just to get buy-in from the others and influence people to join in on the Valkerie plan. He said the plan should go through regardless of whether Hitler survived or not earlier in the film.

However, towards the end, he seemed actually convinced he did kill Hitler, which seemed naive since he wasn't in the bunker where the "air pressure" would kill those the bomb's blast didn't, and that he only had one of two charges in play. Also, letting your driver (one that worked at Hitler's bunker) see you throw out another charge and act really suspicious didn't seem well thought out.

I think the editing, directing, and acting was all pretty suspect in this one. A potentially intriguing story that got lost in its own grandeur. U-571's plot wasn't nearly as suspenseful as killing Hitler and enstating a new government, and McConaughey isn't really the ultimate dramatic actor, but that movie was WAY more entertaining and suspenseful in my book.

The sad part of the story is that their was plenty of explosive power, just that the bomb was placed on one side of a table leg and protected Hitler just enough. History is so full of those minor details that determine such events.

    This movie was really bland.

I feel like if you are attempting to assassinate Hitler the tension should be through the roof, but I didn't feel any here. This movie should have been suspenseful.

I watched it and thought it sucked. I am no history buff by any stretch so I watched and appreciated the background, not knowing a lot of it. However, at the end, when the movies is finished and the paragraphs roll by, it states that this was one of a hundred something failed attempts of his own government at assassinating Hitler, I thought "What made this so special?" And I came to the conclusion "Nothing!!!!!!! This sucked!" That's my review and I am sticking to it.

I like your review even before seeeing the movie. When I first started seeing the previews for it at the mega plex.. I thought to myself.. who wants to see a movie about Hitler these days? seriously, who has any interest in that ? I had a good feeling from the preview that it would be boring.. and it sounds like it is.

I like dramas, suspense, thrillers, etc.. but they have to be good.

what makes a movie good in 2009? action. action packed movies are what the movie goers want to see.

big movies of yesterday like Gone with the Wind would probably fail today as a movie, even though it's a classic.

Name the best movies so far this year? action movies right? Name the movies you are looking forward to come out later this year, action ones, yes!
