This is my first system, so there is a lot that I don't know. I have the receiver, front and rear speakers, and all the wiring and cables coming this week. The sub and center by the next week. I want to set it up and at least use the fronts speaker for the OU/Florida football game. How hard is this going to be to do? I should be fine as far as the wiring and hooking up the cables but didn't know about the settings on the receiver. Also, how do most people use their receiver? Do you use it a lot as a 2.1, 5.1 or just during movies and ballgames, etc. How do they sound on regular TV shows? Can you switch from 2.1 to 5.1 on most receivers. Not sure how much my manual will tell me but wanted to kind of get an idea how you guys do it. I am going to be using a Yamaha 6140, if that makes any difference. Thanks

Well basic / basic I can say this wiring just make sure the red terminal on the receiver go to the red binding post on the speaker for each speaker this way. Now I watch 100% TV or movie / DVD with my receiver 5.1 setup I won't do any other way now. A commercials are made for 5.1 setups well most of them anyway, watch TV that way you know what I mean. ;)

I watch everything in 5.1 (simulated 7.1 actually). Most of the HD shows have some pretty decent surround (sarah conor on fox stands out to me). Even football in HD is in surround (sometimes the crowd sounds pretty cool).

I watch pretty much everything in simulated 7.1. I have a bunch of old VHS tapes of different TV shows that I usually just watch in 2.1 though. They don't sound quite right in surround sound all the time.

The directions in the manual should be fairly straight forward. They label everything pretty well, so I'd imagine you should be able to set it up without much trouble.

Thanks a lot guys. My brother has a Onkyo htib and I don't think he uses very often. Seems like to me, that a person would want to use it as much as possible.

Most definitely even if just analog Left and Right signals, it doesn't sound to bad simulated. ;) I did it for years.

I have my receiver set to output the same signal that is input. If it is broadcast in stereo, my reciever plays it to me in stereo. The best part is, sometimes I have to look to make sure it is in stereo only.......it sounds that good. I never get that feeling in simuated modes.

For parties, sometimes I run music in 5 speaker stereo keeping the sound more evenly dispersed throughout the space.

I also am running 5.1, mostly because I don't have the room for a good 7.1 yet. I had an Onkyo HTIB and it worked great for me, until about 4 months ago when I finally replaced it with what I have now. You should have no problems, enjoy your gear and welcome to Club Polk.

Thanks for the welcome and all the information. I am already thinking about what movies to watch when I get it all set up. Just recorded a Star Wars movie and we have I Am Legends. One more question. Anybody have a good tip for running speaker wire down a wall? I should be able to run it down where the coax cable from the dish goes. I hope.

If you have a cable wire there now, I would add a wire to the cable wire so you can pull the cable wire up with your pull wire. In the attic then tape your new speaker then pull with the pull wire down with the cable wire. Done. :)

Now if you loss the pull wire, you going to have more fun :(

Thanks Bill. That's a good link. Lots of info. Got the receiver today. Wiring, cables and rear speakers coming tomorrow. Then Thursday, I get the sub and the RTi6s. Center to follow soon after. Looks like I will be up and running in a week or so.
