PSW-1000 w/AVR-988 Denon

Greetings. I recently purchased a new AVR-988 Denon, as well as a new PSW-1000. Upon hooking it up to the Pre-out Sub connection, (after exhaustively manipulating all things related to sub hook-up, in the 'Menu', speaking w/the worthless tech support, and trying a second sub and cable), I am unable to get appropriate volume from the sub. If I use speaker hook-ups from the zone 2 amp I get "better" vol, but it is still woefully anemic-to the point of needing it turned-up to mid position, just to hear it! The odd thing is that when I run Denon's software for adjusting the individual channel volume, (in which a 5 dec signal is sent, independently, to the sub), the sub POUNDS! Also, if I connect a cd player DIRECTLY to the sub it performs much better, but nowhere close to how it does during Denon's test. Therefore, I wish to know if anyone has a suggestion. Being the sub weighs 75lbs, (and I live up 40 stairs and carried it up myself), I'm SERIOUSLY hoping that I do NOT have to send it back. FYI: I've also tried hooking it to the pre-outs of a Sherwood receiver I have again, to no avail. However, the Denon test makes me believe that the amp on the sub is still viable, I mean it pounded the floor when I cranked the test signal up to 12 decibels. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank You
