Hi All! Some questions on speaker placement 'geometry'

Hi. I've just signed on as a new member, my Polk speakers are all on the way (which is a story and a half by itself), and I have some kind of odd questions on speaker orientation. My room is 14' W x 18' L x 9 1/2' H with minimal open wall space due to windows , doors, fireplace, etc. I'm aware that toe-in on the mains is a YMMV situation. But since space may be kind of tight, I was wondering primarily about subwoofer orientation - i.e., I know I need at least 6" from each wall for a corner placement, but can that be cheated by rotating the sub 45 degrees? Or should I try an EQ solution through the AVR? I'm not a big fan of boomy bass.

My gear, BTW, consists of a Sony 46" LCD, Onkyo SR705 AVR, Panasonic BD30 Blu-Ray, Denon 2910 DVD. Speakers, once on-hand, will be Polk Audio Monitor 60s (mains), RM8s for the L/R surrounds, an RM8C for the center and a PSW110 bottom end. All will be wired up with 12AWG courtesy monoprice and terminated with some low-cost/hi-quality locking bananas purchased from a vendor on ebay (I'll let you know how these work out, since they're currently priced at around $5.50 a pair).

My background is in military electronics (22 years Navy) and music (live), and once upon a time, I might have qualifed as an "audiophile" (before my ex took my 801's away...). This is my first HT system and I'm looking to balance HT and music with deranged gaming for those weekends that my boys are visiting.

Thanks!

    Sub placement is tricky business.

I have mine about 3" from the wall and facing said wall. I've had it pinned against the wall facing into the room previously.

Moving the sub or your head will make for instantly noticeable differences. Time to experiment.

Room EQ Wizard (REW) at hometheatershack.com. Once you get the hang of it speaker placement is easier and faster to find.

BTW, your AVR will not do much for LFE EQ.
