Look at Dimehead's showcase here. He has rti12s with rti10s in between them. He has the amps to power it. My question is are there any downsides in doing this? Could different crossovers between the speakers create problems in proper imaging or anything?

I'm considering doing this with rti10s and rti8s and I would like any input available.

Bad idea. Imaging, tonal balance, soundstage, could all be messed up. Spend your money on ONE decent pair of front speakers.

Interaural crosstalk will be doubled. Also, if you have different amps, timing can come into play and it will definitely not be a "purists" system by any means. That said, if it is done up the right way, it can be a very pleasing system to the ear. Don't, however, expect to sit down in the sweet spot and experience what you normally would with a normal 2 channel setup. If this is not your expectation, then there are a lot of other positives that a normal 2 channel setup can offer. This of course depends on the synergy of the rig, room and listening habits.

Judging from the posters behind the setup in that showcase, he's obviously a metal head, and was probably just looking for max volume. It would probably be great for that, but I wouldn't imagine the SQ would be to magnificent...for the reasons stated in the last couple posts.

Makes no sense. Collapsed soundstage, fubared imaging, phase problems; not to mention overall room decor. Sounds like a big sacrifice for such a measily gain of average sounding headroom. An appropriate application for HT is one thing, but if the listener is trying to revive the glory days of Quad, they're going about it the wrong way.

He would be better off with a set of SDA's.
