Monitor 70 or RTi8

Which of these speakers would be best for a 2 channel system with no subwoofer. I am using a Yamaha RX 797 100 watt 2 channel receiver. THANKS!

I would step up to the rti/rti a series speaker although your going to get better low end with the monitor 70's the rti series should be a step up in all around sound quality.Which ever speaker you choose you'll be very happy.

Also if it's just for music only I would look at some of Polks vintage gear monitor or sda line. Got a pair of sda's and monitors myself and am very pleased.

Have to agree, the vintage Polks work great for music in 2 channel without a sub. I had a pair of Monitor 12s and now have SDA-1Cs and the only time the Ultra is used is during movies.

My RTi8s madated a sub for music.

I just heard the monitor 60's vs the rti8's and going in I'm not familiar with either but the sound quality from the rti8's was way way better but that being said they were hooked up to different receivers.

QUESTION about the rti8's. They sounded great but I heard what I will refer to as an echo sound (don't know the technical term). Like if you have a surround system and you don't turn off the tv speakers. Is this normal with the rti8's? I know they have a bunch of speakers in them. I'm not sure if it was the demo cd or what. According to the electronic splitter the store had setup it said I was only listening to these two towers in stereo mode with a blu-ray player as the source. Not sure what was going on.

the monitor 70's he's considering are not a vintage model of Polk speaker. they are a current model.

I'd go with the Monitor 70's. the look like they can handle more power.

You can blow a tweeter easily with either one, that is the weakest link.

With 2 channel, the Monitor 70s do well, but it is just a tad short on the depth of treble instruments - for example, with a multi-peace heavy-hitting brass instrumental selection, with the Monitor 70s you will not hear each instrument reach its full potential and clarity. However, with vocals, sax, piano, guitar, mandolin, xylophone, the monitor 70s have a rich and harmonic sound. Another thing, even though the Monitor 70s have two dedicated 6.5 inch woofers, I wasn't happy until I added a sub and then upgraded again to an even better sub. But I am finicky about bass, and what I have now is a 15 inch Epik with 330W, very very deep and sealed design for music. It interfaces seamlessly with the Monitor 70s. But I'm still reluctant to drive the 70s to really high volumes because from what I've read tweeters are often the weakest link.

Distortion kills tweeters. Get a nice clean running external amp and you'll be good to go.

I am using an Outlaw RR2150, and have never turned it up past 9:00 or 9:30. It is rated 100W @ 8 ohms, but is very clean. I haven't blown a tweet with this rig, but have read about that on this forum. My old vintage Model 10s used to blow tweets about once every 5 years, even using a very clean SpectroAcoustics 202 amp 180 watts into 8 ohms.
