SACD Remaster of an old original release?

Is something like this even worth it for SACD? It was originally released in stereo in 1959.

Dave Brubeck Time Out in SACD (Non hybrid)

Also avail in remastered redbook

Would it be worth twice the price to get the SACD version or will the remastered redbook be just as good?

Otherwise any other opinions on this album?

The SACD is worth the extra money.

Check with Danny. IIRC, he said there were two SACD versions. One is the multichannel/stereo version and the other is the super duper Japanese release copy that I've been looking for and it's currently available from Amazon for $70. I don't remember what was so special about it but check with Danny.

I think this is it but I'm not sure.

No, I have not listen to either versions.

Japanese version of any CD/SACD will always be more expensive than the US/European versions.

As for how many versions of "Time Out" SACD is out there, there were 2 US versions of this SACD title....stereo only single layer (pictured below) and multi-channel single-layer.

In addition, Europe also got a multi-channel hybrid SACD version (pictured below). The CD layer on this SACD is HDCD-encoded, but unmarked on neither the packaging nor on the disc.

Both versions sound fantastic. This title is a "must have" for any SACD collection.

What makes the Import version (Japan) version so expensive? Is there something special about them (SQ wise) other than the fact they are imported?
So even though the original recording was in 1959, the remastered SACD is still that much better?

I ordered the one I linked to from Amazon. It appears to have both Stereo and Multi-Channel on the same SACD. I'm assuming at this point that all SACDs that have Multichannel mixes also contain the Stereo mix by default, is this a correct asumption?

I swear I recently saw a Japanese version for under $30 somewhere-I'll have to look again.

    Thanks

Music software, no matter what format, is more expensive over there....even to the domestic Japanese consumers. Of course, once a disc has been imported to the US, the local retailer will add his/her profit into the price they charge you, making the disc even more expensive.

As for sound quality, I think that depends. The Japanese music labels are usually meticulous about the quality of the pressing for the disc and the details in the packaging. Additional cost, and therefore the higher prices, comes from translation of the text in the liner notes to Japanese and the cost of the extra paper for it.

Don't forget that digital audio, no matter what format, is an approximation of analog. SACD has a much higher sampling rate than CD, therefore it has higher potential to sound like analog. Don't assume a recording is/was recorded in analog that it will sound inferior to digital. There are good and bad recordings in all forms and formats.

SACD was originally a 2 channel only format. Even today, if you look at the top-of-the-line SACD players from companies like Marantz, Denon, and Sony, they're 2 channel only machines. Multi-channel surround sound capability was added later in the development of SACD in order to compete with its rival, DVD-Audio. Which is why there were 2 domestic SACD versions of "Time Out"....the stereo only version came out first. As for the assumption that every SACD should have a stereo mix, you're correct. In fact, Sony/Philips mandated a 2 channel stereo mix (or a mono mix) to be included on every SACD. However, there're SACDs out there that don't contain a 2 channel mix, but you can count the number of those on your fingers.

I have the multi hybrid from acousticsounds.com.
    In one word...I love it!
The engineers, IMO, brought the studio sound out on this one. Clean and cool sounding.
You won't be disappointed if you don't listen for flaws....

    encouragement4's SPAM reported

Well I got the SACD on the 27th (of Dec). I must say I do like it. 1st track is somewhat familiar, Track #3 (Take Five), is definately familiar. However once again, I'm hearing some kind of artifact on Track 2. WTH??? Well I'm not going to pass judgement yet until I hear it on a different system-for all I know it might be some crazy drum sweep or something. Otherwise-without too critical an ear on, its sounds real sweet!! I find myself throwing it on here and there.
