Rubberized "Coatings in a Can" vs. Mortite / Dynamat

I've just placed an online order for "Plasti Dip" & "Liquid Tape" (no afilliation) for experimentation. I'm hoping others in the group will also find competing products to try.

My initial take is that Plasti Dip will be runny and hard to manage as its viscosity is rated at somewhere around 1000 centipoise (cps) when compared to items on the chart link at bottom. But somehow this is the same stuff that can be over 1/16th of an inch thick on the ends of your hand tools (probably dipped in multiple times).

My primary thought was to use it to replace Foam Gaskets/Mortite, but the Adobe Acrobat .pdf literature link below states some of the benefits are vibration reduction and sound deadening. That opens the door for experimentation versus Dynamat.

I considered adding this info the Mortite thread at http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74524, but decided the creation of a new thread might be more appropriate.

I am going to try a similar thing soon by painting the driver baskets with a liquid deadening compound and see if it does as well as dynamat on the baskets. My local hardware store has a rubber/latex anti-slip coating that I will be trying. Good luck.

I think this could become a very interesting thread. I think brush-on's have the potential to deaden ring, and maybe be used as a sealer around the magnets to prevent magnet shift. The stuff may dry too hard to replace gaskets or Mortite.

    Not a good idea... ;)

I want to go pick up a small can soon. Christmas depleted me, but it should be in the budget in a month.

You guys are going to screw up some perfectly good speakers.

    By deadening the baskets?

I'm guessing that if the brush it on stuff drips onto the passive or the driver material it may result in bad "juju",, you guys go ahead,, I'm gonna go with dynamat. Good luck, be careful, and let us know how it turns out.

It's kind of rubbery elastic, actually. Sorta like silicon, but maybe not as strong a bond. I've used it on other applications like substituting for black tape or shrink tape. On my earbud wires, actually where they frayed.

It should peel off other substances easy enough.

Actually, I used some of that to seal one of the buytl surrounds in a passive that I accidentally  <HEADSLAP> punched a hole in with a drill. It was better than nothing until I could get a replacement driver. It was better than better-than-nothing, actually. It was pretty good.

edit: not a passive. It was one of the 6.5" MW650*'s.

Of course drips on the cone or spider would mess things up, but I don't see any reason why it couldn't be taped off just like painting. This would also make it a lot more time intensive than dynamat, but I thought it'd be worth a try...

Jake, I just can't see that stuff having the effect that Dynamat does.

I don't believe it has as much mass as Dynamat, making it less effective.

I'm thankful for all of the insights and cautions.

I guess there will be time to get even more opinions before using as the darn vendor just emailed that my products have been back-ordered and won't arrive until January 8th.

Yes, I'm going to go very slowly. I have 3 old magnet shifted 6.5's that still work that I will be experimenting on, and I myself am skeptical that this will prove to be a good fix. But I will learn SOMETHING in the process.

But remember, at some point some here in the group were the first to try an idea and they ended up pioneering tweaks that have come to be accepted as the "right way" to do any given project.

Thanks in advance for supplying input and giving the latitude to try this.

Dynamat Extreme is designed specifically for this kind of application and is a proven product. I know I said this before buy its inexpensive and easy to use.

Yep, I love the stuff and am already adept at significantly over-applying Dynamat :-)
