My dad likes to do some recording in his music room sometimes. I thought these speakers would work nicely. I got the non deluxe version for $160 shipped. Does anyone have these monitors? How do they sound to you?

I don't have that speaker but I got some M-Audio AV30 tonight. These are replacing my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 that the sub amp died on. So far, after only an hour or so, I like them very much. From what I read they get better after some break in time. Compared to the Klipsch the bass is not as strong but they image great and to me sound better.AVR: Elite VSX-21TXH

I picked up a pair of the deluxe bx-5's recently for my home studio. I've been on the road for work, so I haven't had much ear time on them yet. First impression, is they have very nice bass response for a 5" woofer. Tweeter is very smooth. Playing back a recording of my drums (in the same room) is indistinguishable from the real thing. I might add a matching sub, to keep from overcompensating the bass, which is common with smaller monitors.
Overall, for $300 list, they are very good performers. I have only heard one other pair, in this size, that clearly outperformed the M-Audio-the much more expensive Dynaudios. ($499 ea.)
I don't think I would use them in a 2ch. rig, unless you have a very small room, they are near-field monitors after all.... They would be ideal in an office rig, IMO. -

I would also like to test with known DVDs and/or HD DVDs as I would consider using when travelling in the family as I would use for outdoor movies etc... (where not looking for big sound and effects but ratter quality at lower level) IE: Deck big screen movie projections, Hotel room and others of the like while travelling.DARE TO SOAR:

Yet they are very good for classical music. I have been testing them yesterday evening with a small mixing console which provides for pre-out and the end result is much better than straigh out of a computer or DVD player (lower o/p from computer => slight o/p improvement from the DVD player => best o/p and control out of the mixing console). I have yet to test with othe types of music such as rock, po etc... which I suspect would require the help of a small subwoofer... Do you have a specific subwoofer you would recommend (studio type)?

M-Audio makes a matching BX-10. A little pricey at msrp, but street prices should be a bit better.

Though any sub with a compatible crossover slope should be fine. Some folks are more particular about matching gear....I'm not one of those.:D -
