So, What Now?

This stuff is addicting. For years I had been wanting to make some upgrades to my RTA11TLs. Now that it is done, I have the tinker itch even more. Don't get me wrong, I am very pleased with the results of my RTA11TL upgrades. It is just now that it is done, what do I do now? Do I somehow just get content with what I have? Or...

I was half thinking of selling the RTA11TLs to start a new project. I just hate to part with them. My wife still thinks they take up too much room as they are preventing me from building built-in book cases in the family room. Eventually I really want to do is design and build a nice set of speakers. Perhaps some nice bookshelf speakers and a sub or 2. Problem is that I have a very limited budget and even more limited time.

Maybe I need AA (Audioholics Anonymous).

Single driver speakers are a pretty good way to start. Inexpensive quality driver like a Fostex can yield pretty good results. There are a number of open source build plans as well.

It is never enough! Stop, take a deep breath and write down the pros and cons. Take stock of your ability and time and review your list, then make the decision to upgrade. If you do chase it somemore, you will never by happy with what you have!

That is my fear. I just need to enjoy what I've got for now. One day I will design and build a speaker system though. Maybe I'll shift efforts to improving my car sound system.

That's a good option. You've gotta have good sound in your car...especially if you spend a lot of time in it.

I've been thinking about building myself a pair of speakers too actually. My dad has been a professional woodworker for a long time, so he has a fully equipped shop that I could take advantage of as well...which would make it a bit easier.

One idea is to get a project that is a little flawed. For example, the amp that I built had a few problems OEM, so I was able to tweak and upgrade for over 6 months on it. Either that, or start a project that is over your head, so that you have to learn along the way, and thus take more time.

Zingo, I think that is what I'm after. Something to challenge me and that I can learn from. The RTA11TL upgrade was fun and fruitful but rather basic. Car sound systems, I've been there and done that several times. I did learn some stuff from these projects.

Now a power amp that I could run off my Denon receiver (has preamp outs) has got me thinking.

    Thanks

I curbed the audio speaker upgrade bug by starting a speaker business. I can play with speakers all the time now! Wait, maybe that feeds the addiction! Oh well. ;)
