So I think my DVD player is getting ready to take a crap on me.

It keeps making this loud click click click noise over and over again while trying to load DVD's. It doesn't do it while loading CD's though. Any ideas why that could be?
I've been wanting to get a new player anyway, but I was trying to wait until after I got my speakers. Guess the speakers are gonna have to get pushed back a little more though now...
Any suggestions? I'd like to get a player that will both upscale DVD's and play SACD's if possible. This is the one I was kinda looking at, the Onkyo DV-SP504. It plays SACD, and upscales DVD's to 1080i. I could get it through Onkyo's online shop for about 180 dollars...There's a newer version too, the DV-SP506 which upscales to 1080p, but at 300 dollars it's not worth the extra 120 bucks.
Any other suggestions that would fall into the 200ish dollar category?

I'll try that tomorrow...I don't think that's the problem though. It's making a really loud clicking noise...It sounds like there's something trying to spin, and it's getting caught on something. Plus it's playing CD's fine. I'll try that though anyway...it can't hurt. The nirvana inducer-

Probably the pickup laser. Very common problem in many less expensive players. Do a Google search on your model to see if it's a common problem. I had a Pioneer DVD 333 that took an early "crap" on me and come to find out many of them did. Same symptoms.
Good luck

P.s.s. Sorry thought you had a less expensive player but ti looks to be a solid mid-fi piece that shouldn't break so early on in it's life cycle. Panasonic BD-35 / Sony BD-S350. I don't use mine for RBCD but they're both competent DVD players with next-gen muscle. I'd at least think about it if you're going to spend $200 on a player.
If not, the Pioneer 48AV and Oppos are the most discussed universal players here in DVD's twilight.Currently listening to:

Walmart here in Canada has a blu-ray player for $169.00cdn. That's like two bucks american right now! Shop the post-Christmas sales and get a BD player. Personally I recomend PS3 but I understand the newer 80gig versions don't do SACD like mine does. Bummer. If you don't want BD player then the Pio 48AV for $99.00 can't be beat.SDA-1C (full mods)

It's bad out there...I had a bunch of shoveling to do this morning, because I haven't gotten it done in a few days...it sucked to say the least. It's about -5 right now, with like 20 mph constant winds. Needless to say, I think I'm gonna spend most of my day inside.
I had thought about getting a Blu-ray player...but for my price range all I'd be able to get would be like the cheapest BR players that you can get. Plus with my current TV it wouldn't even make a difference really, because it's not high def. I'd rather wait until I have a high def TV, and save up for a nicer BR player. Plus most lower end BR players don't play SACD IIRC.
I checked out the Oppo and the Pioneer units that were suggested. The Pioneer was souding really nice, especially the price tag, until I found out that it only had 6 channel analog outputs. I have 7.1, and I'd like to use it to it's full potential, so that one is probably out.
The Oppo looks really nice though. It looks fairly equivalent to the Onkyo I had in mind, but it does have some extra features. 1080p upscaling, rather than the 1080i in the Onk'. The USB input is a big plus too.
I think it's gonna be between the Onkyo and the Oppo though...I was leaning towards the Onkyo over a lot of other players, because it matches my receiver, but the Oppo would match it just as well...
I've got some decidin' to do...Thanks for the advice everyone. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated as well. The nirvana inducer-

Yes, we just had one. Next one probably in the Spring. If you're still active I'm sure you'll get an invite.
We usually meet in Rockford but there was one in Bloomington last May or June."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Sounds cool. I'm only about 45 miles south of Rockford, so it'd be an easy trip. Bloomington's not to far off either.
What goes on at the Polk get togethers usually? Just chilling out discussing audio equipment and listening to music and whatnot? Do people bring with different speakers and stuff to check out?
I think I've decided that I'm gonna go with the Oppo DV-980H though. I've been looking at reviews for that, and the Onkyo I was looking at, and over all the Oppo sounds like it's the nicer one. The Onkyo has better upscaling, but that's not really a big issue for me. The Oppo is even gonna be like ten dollars cheaper, and that's never a bad thing. The nirvana inducer-

It's good that you know what you want and both the players you're looking at sound swell, but I'm just wondering - do you have any 7.1 material? I didn't really think there was any and that the surround back channels were a gimmick to drive speaker and receiver sales... I remember they were rolling out 9.1 and 10.1 receivers for a while.
I was looking at that Onkyo myself (refurb from Accessories 4 Less) or a similar Marantz model before I jumped into Blu. Without a HDTV (and if you've got a decent SACD/DVD-A collection) you're right - it would be mostly wasted... except for lossless soundtracks and BD concerts.Currently listening to:

I don't have currently have any 7.1 material, no, but I want to be ready for when/if more is released. Plus I think it will still convert 5.1 multi-channel SACD's to 7.1...I'm not positive on that though.
I don't think I want to make the jump to Blu-ray yet though. I hate to go and buy the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market, just for the sake of having one. Especially when I can't even take advantage of the high def.
Plus there are barely any Blu-ray's that will play SACD...the few that there are way above my price range. The cheapest alternative would be to find one of the earlier PS3's...but that's not really the route I wanna go. I'd barely ever play any games on it anyway. The nirvana inducer-

I understand how spending the extra bucks on a ps3 might not be what you're looking for if you're not into games. But just a thought to keep in mind- it also works as an upscaling dvd player, and can stream audio/video from your pc. I guess the first isn't so much an advantage since you can't take advantage of high def yet- but it's a good value for something you could get a lot of use out of in the future- even if you're not a gamer.

I was considering it for a while. I just like the idea of having a standalone component more. For one, I like the looks of home theater components more. A PS3 would look out of place sitting next to my receiver in my opinion.
Video game consoles have a long history of not working right after being used as DVD/CD players for extended periods. Xbox's and PS2's both have a tendency of degrading over time when used as your main player. It may not be the same for the new generation consoles, but I'm not going to chance it.
If I were to get a console it'd be a 360 anyway...it just has more games that I like. The nirvana inducer-

I went the 7.2 (two subs) route for a while but found no real tangible advantage over the 5.2 setup. Plus the extra room the rear speakers took up was a pain. They only really worked well on DVD's with 7.1 soundtracks and even then to me it sounded kind of unatural. I took the two out and have not even for one second missed them. Also, unless you have a high def or at very least component video TV, upscaling is moot. The TV on your signature won't accept an upscaled signal.SDA-1C (full mods)

That's quite true, but my current TV isn't going to be a permanent staple in my home theater either...It's going to be upgraded late next year most likely, so I want to have the player that I'm going to need at that point. I'm not going to buy one without upscaling now, and then have to buy another one a year from now.
I prefer 7.1 over 5.1 for a lot of music listening. I listen to a lot of 2 channel as well, but a lot of the things I listen to I just prefer in surround sound. 7.1 gives you a much broader soundscape in my ears. I had 5.1 for a long time before upgrading to 7.1 a while back, and I'd rather stick with the 7.1. It makes me feel more "enveloped" in the music when I'm listening.
Plus I'm sure more movies are going to be released in true 7.1 over time. The nirvana inducer-

Oh I'm already waiting for that one...DSOTM is arguably my favorite album of all time by any band. It's definitely the first CD that's going in after I get a player.
