Hi:

I read that this Bluray player can decode internally TrueHD, but can't decode DTS-MA internally. My question is if I set that player as Bitstream via HDMI, and using my Onkyo706, Does it pass the audio thru HDMI, and the Onkyo will decode it as DTS-Master Audio???

If yes, can I do the same on a PS3?

not sure on the first question, but for the second, the ps3 decodes DTS-MA onboard and sends it out as multichannel PCM to the receiver. It cannot bitstream the encoded DTS-MA (or TrueHD) signal out for the receiver to decode.

Here are the capabilities from the review.

The MVBD2510 is a Profile 1.1 Bonus View Blu-ray player. It can:

Play Blu-ray Disc movies in high definition through its component outputs (up to 1080i resolution) or HDMI output (up to 1080p resolution)
Play picture-in-picture Bonus View content contained on Blu-ray Discs
Upscale DVDs for better image quality on HDTVs
Decode Dolby TrueHD lossless audio tracks
Decode DTS-HD High Resolution audio, a very high quality audio format that is not lossless
Play Uncompressed PCM lossless audio tracks (strictly speaking it is not decoded)
Decode Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound
Transmit decoded audio through its multichannel analog outputs, allowing those with older, non-HDMI receivers to enjoy high quality sound from Blu-ray
Bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI to a receiver for decoding
Play videos, music, and digital pictures from a flash drive connected to its USB port
Wide disc compatibility: BD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-ROM, CD, CD-R/-R. (Given Memorex sells a lot of recordable media, it is nice to see them put their money where their mouth is, here!)

It says that it can bitstream dts-master. And yes that means it will pass it through to your receiver for decoding. My sony bdps350 can only bitstream dts master also. I dont know how the pic quality is for the memorex but it has some nice features.

Also javygonx is right the ps3 is only capable of doing the decoding itself on board. It cannot bitstream the loseless audio formats right now. Hope this helps.

Thank you guys, That means that DTS-MA and TrueHD on PS3 is useless, because it decodes it internaly and send it as pCM Multichannel? n that case should I get the Memorex for DTS-MA and TrueHD so the Onkyo 706 will decode it?

Or hearing decoded from PS3 thru PCM Multichannel will sound as good as if decoded directly from Receiver?

Same thing. Decoding the signal is just a mathematical algorithm, so i don't think it can be done in a more or less 'quality' way. Ive heard people argue over this before but either way it wouldnt make the ps3 'worthless' with those signals. Many stand alone players decode onboard too- you're still getting the full trueHD/HD-MA sound

I actually use the PS3 for my main home theater setup. THe sony is in the bedroom. I personally dont here the difference between the ps3 decoding it or when i use my 350 and the receiver decoding it. The only difference is you dont get the beautiful true hd or dts master come up on your receiver screen. Not a biggie to me though it looks nice in the bedroom. You are getting the same audio tracks with both sources.

Wow.. Thanks guys. Now I can sleep happy. I thought it will sound different or Im not going to get the whole TrueHD or DTA-MA on PS3 because of the Multichannel PCM Thing.
About how good the sound of music compression on PS3 between AAC, MP3, and the other Format PS has, which sound better using same audio quality? ex: 128 kbp, or192kbps, etc.

One more thing. Lets say I have an HDMI Receiver without TrueHD or DTS-MA like Denon 589, but I have the PS3. Can I get TrueHD or DTS-MA by using the PS3 to decode the audio thru PCM Multichannel, even if the Receiver Does Not Support TrueHD or DTS-MA?

    Javy,
It seems you have a lot of questions here. 1st: Yes, the memorex set to bitstream will give you DTS-HD Master on the Onkyo 706. PS3 will do the same by decoding internally and sending the signal as PCM Multichannel. There is essentially no difference between these two methods of dealing with True HD or DTSHD Master.
See my response in your other thread regarding PS3 and the lower end Denon/Onkyo models. You need a receiver than can accept PCM multichannel over HDMI. Those models do not.

Not sure about Denon, but every current Onkyo (except the 5xx series) does PCM Multi and decodes the TrueHD/DTS HD Master. I am talking about the TX-SRxxx models, not the ones that are part of an "HT in a Box".

I bought Memorex MVBD2510 for $139 in Sams. For my test. If you have an AVR with DTS-MA and TrueHD, all you have to do is set the BD Player as bitstream and the AVR will decode it. That way you can see the TrueHD or DTS-MA on the AVR.. I got PS3, and I always see the damn :MultiChannel. BTW, works only when connected via HDMI.

You can set Optical Audio too, and set as PCM or Bitstream.

Now for Video Quality, Same as good as the PS3. The only thing, its a bit slow than PS3 when loading, and some laggy when you use the remote control. When you press "Pause", or any function on the Control it has like 2 seconds delay. Loading BD movies will take no more than 55 seconds before the Main Menu of the Movies, so its OK.

I have to try DVD Upscaling. Didnt try it yet. I will keep you posted, tomorrow about this!
