I'm home for Christmas trying to get my dad's computer running better. I used the Norton Removal tool from another thread to get rid of all the Norton BS on his machine. Prior to that I had downloaded the AVG Free file so I could do all the removal and installation offline and not worry about viruses.

Well, my dad's machine is trying to run the "index.php" file I download from CNET with Microsoft's Picture It! 7.0?????

How the hell do I get this file to execute? Do I need to download some .php installer? PLEASE Help!! I'm online with no virus protection! (I did download and install Firefox so I should be a little safer for now!)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE QUICK HELP!!!!

Wes

That sounds oddball. php is a forum type scripting language like for this forum's software.
Sounds to me like you downloaded the wrong thing. Are you trying to run a flash video from CNET or something?

My success with AVG Free is based on installing after nuking and repaving the hard drive. Unfortunately, no matter how good the removal tool is, I have seen tentacles of programs still around. If possible, backup the documents before doing anything else.

I hope someone else can give you the answer you need.

Sounds like something stuck in the registry from a previous install.
Ashampoo has a few programs I use to clean things up.
    Ashampoo Optimiser might help?

Yes those are junk "Calls" to the registry from previously installed programs.
Even tho you un-install programs there is ALWAYS something left in the registy.
Thus when ya boot the computer it's still looking for the old program and calls to it.
Fusterating but that's Microsloth for ya!

I tried deleting the .php extension in the Folder Options so I could choose to open it something else, like IE, but it wouldn't run. It was just a loop where I kept clicking open, etc... and went back to the same thing.

I was gonna say at worst you could reinstall XP and not lose anything.
Been there and done that. :(
It would fix any problems it finds.
Hafta see what happens after a registry fix.

I tried opening the file with notepad and just got junk. Should I try wordpad MFC application? I'm redownloading the index.php file.

    I figured it out!!!!

Apparently the AVG file is compressed with a program called 7-zip and for whatever reason the self-extractor wouldn't work for me. So, I downloaded 7-zip, extracted the files to a folder and found the setup.exe file and ran it.

AVG 8.0 Free is up and running now. :D No more Norton!!!

Yeah, I've been using it as well for a few years now. Between AVG, Firefox, SpySweeper, and the NoScript add-on I've been virus free for a couple of years now, even going to some questionable places every now and then.

7 zip is also a great little (free)program.

If anyone else has this problem, note that AVG offers a direct download of the original .exe file.
