Ok. I've got a lot of stuff stashed away, and had some time with the wife
out of the house to go nuts. I got out some amps and preamps, and the
Hales. I tried the Rotel rb980 with the GNP Valkries. The 16 ohm rating
sucked the life out of the Rotel. Bass wasn't good. The AR vt-60
doesn't even flinch, just hook up the 16 ohm tap and go.
Next up, the Hale Revelation Ones. Nice, heavy duty better bookshelf.
The problem in one of the x-overs is fixed, and they sound good.
Nice warm sound, surprising bass. I saw a review that called them
forward sounding. Not by what I heard. They are about 86db rated,
which means the 50 watt tube amp isn't going to rock out with these.
The Rotel did a bit better, but the low end slam wasn't as good.
I then tried the Parasound psp1000 pre in place of the AE Symphonies.
Sorry, no contest. The AE with Mullards is better. The AE sounds pretty
good with the current set-up. As long as I stay at resonable volume
(no wife yelling at me to turn it down) it all works pretty good together.
I still need to sew up the grill cloth for the Hales. I really need to
save up for somehting more efficient, like B&W 683's. That would be a
fine stopping point without breaking the bank.

16 ohm is built for tubes, no suprise there. Dibs on the Hales when/if broham.
683's? I'd love to have a pair to kick around. I tell you though, right now, the RTiA5's PSW1000 combo with Steve Earle's latest - and a little James Beam - the world seems like a little better place.
Cheers,

You might be waiting a while on those. I've spent some quality time with
Dynaudio booksheves, and these seem to hold their own.
I just hope I can do a passable job sewing up the grill cloth for installation.
I don't know what's up lately with speakers on CL. I've seen a buttload of
pretty decent sets show up. Timeframe 600's, Vandersteen 2Cs,
Dalquist dq-30s, JBL l65s,B&Ws and others. A lot of Classic Mac stuff, too.
I guess XMAS funds are coming up short."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -
