What's wrong with the LSi's efficiency?

There are those that would prefer to not have a 4ohm speaker and the corresponding amps required to make them sing.

I remember a couple of years ago one of the Polk guys (Al or Paul maybe) posted on the forum some of the engineering reasons why the LSi series were designed as 4ohm speakers and the tradeoffs that would have to be made to change that. Having to use a high current amp designed to properly drive the LSis is just part of the deal and if Polk tried to make them "more efficient" chances are they would loose some of the characteristics that make them such a good speaker at such a good price.

I'm sorry Shack, I was referring to their sensitivity. But, what you stated about their impedance, is probably what the others meant.

As for their 4 ohm rating, Polk would have to either radically change their speaker design or find another parts supplier who makes higher impedance drivers.

Speaking of, I just ran across this link... Does that author look familiar? :)

I'm sorry, but they should in no way downgrade the LSI series just because people don't want to cough up the money for separate amplification. That is what the RTI series is there for.

If you want the great sound of the LSI's get up off of the wallet and give them what they need to sound their best.

A downgrade wouldn't be necessary, just changing driver arrangements or using parts from other vendors. Either would obviously require the speaker to be re engineered and I believe some of it's value would go away due to a necessary price increase.

I seriously doubt that you can do all that re-engineering & new drivers and god knows what else and still keep the same unique sound that the LSI's possess! Therefore, to ME it would be a downgrade.

Of course, now that Matt is retiring, DEI will be able to do whatever they want to the Polk line. They may very well do just that!
