I've tried moving other threads I started into this direction to some success but I decided I needed to create a new one just for this question.

What is the best? I plan to use HDMI for audio output and want to be able to switch between 5.1 and 2.1 for SACD playback. Does anyone own either of these units? Which would sound better do you think?

I'd go with the Pioneer. It'll do everything you want as well/almost as well as the Oppo at less than half the price.
    Currently listening to:

    Marantz SR5004
    Sony BDP-S370
    Apple TV V2
    Audio Technica AT-LP120
    Mirage CMD-5 x 5
    Bic H-100

Just out of curiosity, have you considered the 980,,I don't own one, but folks on other forums are saying the SQ on the 980 is very good,, the 981 may have a tad better PQ though.
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Picture quality does not matter to me. I'll do some reading about sq. If the 980 is legit maybe I'll get it. Now the pioneer is part of their "elite" line but at $99 this doesn't mean much. I know price doesn't equal quality but if anyone has heard either or both for whatever reasons I'd like to know your reactions.

The Pioneer uses the same Mediatech chipset as the 980, and has all the same features, including direct DSD output from HDMI. It originally retailed for $299, they are closing them out at $99.

I've used both, but not in the same system. The Pioneer has a more solid CD tray, and seems much more solid in overall build as well. They are both plastic though.

I haven't used the Oppo, but I have the Pio and its great. As far as User Interface, it could be better. The only way to change the layer it plays (5.1 vs 2, SACD vs CD) is to go into the menus and change it. You have to have a TV hooked up to view the menus-this is not do-able on the little display on the unit itself. Personally I think they should have just put a couple nice little buttons on the front to allo you to easily select the mode you want to be in, without having to hook up a TV.
Another oddity I've noticed is that you can't configure the sub unless you tell it that you have 5.1 speakers. If you select Stereo, you lose the sub output. I just left it a 5.1 but selected SACD 2 channel layer as default to get 2.1.

That was a deal-killer for me.
