Onkyo TX-SR506 very quiet with MP3 input

Every other input to the receiver plays back fine and I certainly get nowhere near maxing out the volume. The exception is when using an MP3 player for input. I have it connected to the "Tape" analog input using an RCA to minijack cable. Even with the volume on the MP3 player maxed, I still can max out the volume on the receiver but it is not very loud.

I've read about the "Intellivolume" feature on the Onkyo receiver but it does not sound like this is the answer. My understanding (which could be flawed) is that the Intellivolume matches the volume settings for each input so at the same indicated level on the volume meter, they all are at the same loudness, but if I can max it out as is will this really help?

Does anyone have experience with this or a similar problem?

Thanks!
HT

Just the auxiliary input on the front of the receiver, but it had the same result.
