Since I have gotten the vintage SDA bug, I have found that I enjoy pairing up SDA speakers with Vintage receivers. For some reason I think they sound better than later receivers made for HT. I am looking for opinions on great late 1980's receivers to mate with SDA speakers. Kinda of trying to hook up the best speakers in the day with the best receivers in the day. It's a pet project of mine. Right now I am using a Kenwood 9600 receiver but that is from the late 1970's. I am looking for killer 2 channel receivers from 1985 thru 1991. Any input would be appreciated.

I like NAD products. That looks like a good fit and something I would be interested in. What models in the late 80's were considered the heavy hitters of the day. I remember going into our local high end shop and they were pushing Yamaha's, NAD and Onkyo. Also some Sony ES and Pioneer does that seem right.

I've got a Carver HR-772 The Receiver that kicks serious butt for an all in one. Great phono stage, decent tuning, and 140 watts per channel. Plus sonic holography (all SDA users please control yourselves). I think made around 1990. Found it in a pawn shop for under $100.00. No remote though...

Carver "The Receiver" or "Receiver 2000". 150wpc for The Receiver and 200wpc for the "2000". I am not talking about any of the HR model numbers such as HR-752 or 772.

I'd look at Luxman or Tandberg from that time frame as well.

Just for clarification...my HR-772 has the label "The Receiver" on the back but is NOT the legendary "The Receiver" George is talking about. Great performance none the less.

A big, freakin' Onkyo! I have a TX-7000 or something like that. It weighs a ton and is only 90wpc or something like that. Nikko is a quasi-player. I drove the Carver Amazings with a 100wpc, Nikko NR-1219 once, but only for about ten minutes cause it sounded handsome. But it drove them.

A somewhat rare and very under rated (wpc)receiver is the Kyocera R-851 @85wpc with mosfet power and a sweet & smooth sound that's often compared to tube equipment. They make cell phones and copiers now, but for a very brief period in the 80s they made some nice audio stuff. I've still got my R851 and two Kyocera CDPs that I'll never get rid of. The 851 has NO problem powering some SDA- 1As to high volume levels cleanly and for long periods while barely getting warm. SOL on a remote though! a couple links:

There was an 861 also but I don't know anything about that one.

Are you sure the 9600 is common ground?

Why not go separate? It's easier to get good separate gear from that era.

You can always add an amp with a receiver with pre outs. I was looking for high powered receivers of the late 80's to match up with the era of the SDA's. I was looking for period correct receivers to put on display in my house. I thought that would be interesting. You guys gave me some good ideas. I do like the NAD that was mentioned and some others.

I had a killer Oink back in the 80's that could drive stacked Advents without getting hot and they aren't the most efficient 6 ohmers ever made. I had a Denon and an intergrated Kenwood that could drive them, too, but not to the levels that I required in my early 20s and got hotter, The best was an HK, just can't recall an of the numbers. Also, I ended up looking for High Current more than high watts.

I know you are looking for late 80's receivers but thought I would throw this one out there for the heck of it. ** Rotel RX 1603** From everything I have seen and read it is one highly sought after receiver that gives a very pleasing sound. A monster to say the least (180Wx2) and weighs 75 lbs. I know there are tons of other receivers but I thought this one looked bad **** imo.

I like this pic because it shows just how big these receivers are. The pic is from the cover of the May 1978 issue of Stereo Review Magazine showing some of the Monster Receivers together (from top to bottom they are the Nikko NR-1415, Hitachi SR-2004, Kenwood KR-9600, Marantz 2600, Rotel RX-1603 and Pioneer SX-1980). Notable absences are the Concept 16.5, Sansui G-9000, Akai AA-1120 and the Technics SA-1000.
