Old Rgdynami Expander? Worth buying?

Apparently they some how increase your dynamic range? I have a home studio so I understand compression and limiting and all that, but I don't get how the hell an expander works? What is a good price for the RG dynamic one if it's in decent shape, and will it do much if I'm just using CDs, not records? Thanks for the info.
