Transporting a Refridgerator

Today I decided to go around to the local electronics stores here in the Dallas area, wanted to try my luck and see if I could get any good deals. I went into Frys, and found a great deal on an LG fridge. Its about 300 dollars off the normal price. I have been planning on getting my mom a new fridge for Xmas for some months now. The problem is, she lives in Oklahoma City. There is no Frys in OKC, so I would have to buy it here in Dallas. I did check other stores that OKC did have, like Bestbuy, however the same LG fridge is 100 dollars more expensive.

Since I am going back to OKC anyways for the holiday, I was planning on purchasing the fridge from Frys and drive it back to OKC. Only to find out that I could not lay the fridge down on its back or sides, according to the sales people at Frys. They stated that it could damage the fridge something along the lines of the compressor. Does anyone know if this is true? and why would it be so? Anyone that know, it would be greatly appreciated.

The preference is to keep your fridge standing up. The problem is that the oil runs out of the compressor and into the coils and other parts of the system. When you plug it in, the compressor burns up due to lack of oil.

You can lay them down, but I'd wait at least a week before thinking about plugging it in. Others here will tell you that only a day or two is sufficient, but I'd rather play it safe with my appliances.

As Isig said, keep it standing up if possible. If not, lay it on it's side as opposed to on the back and prop the top end up on something. A few hours is enough to let the oil drain back down, just let it sit overnight and you will be fine.

Yes you have to leave them sit for a while after you lay them down. That would be my biggest concern.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

You can damage the compressor, not just oil but the valves as well. Split the difference with a GC for that amt. @ BB?

For a $100 difference, I would not bother with the trouble of loading and transporting a refrigerator that distance, too many things can go wrong. Pay the extra hundred and get it delivered right into the kitchen.

I was just about to type the same thing, I would spend the extra 100 bucks and have less worry about transporting.

    ^^^^ All excellent advice.

Wait at least 1 day after setting the refrig in place upright.

For $100 difference, though, listen to the folks advising you to buy closer to home and let them deliver it to your mom's kitchen.

Do a pricematch with Lowe's or Bestbuy in OKC. You have to show them a physical ad. C'mon, you've never done that before?:p

I've heard good things about the LG fridges too.

I wouldn't put a fridge on its side/back with I-35 as rough as it is just north of the border. I've had compressors mounted on springs and had them come off the springs inside and be worthless once that happened. Shop harder for that local buy.

    Just my opinion....

Nice little Xmas light display along I-35 in Ardmore if you drive up at night. Don't know how many miles it is by now but it has grown each year.

Thanks for the input from everyone. It turns out that bestbuy in Okc does not carry this model. I guess I will try to find one in Okc instead, make life easier, though, 100 dollar saved is 100 dollars more for my audio stuff.

Yes, Interstate 35 is 18 wheeler heaven and the transmit north of the border is horrible! Living in Dallas for the past several years, construction along the border, ahem Windstar Casino is just stupid, but now its done with I think, now its just along the Purcell area! Interstate 35 will never be done with!

Xmas lights? yeah its impossible to miss!

Economy is tough and what not. However a fridge is important, it stores the food. I just want to show appreciation to momma for all the things and try to save along the way..

thank you for all the input...
