Upgrading old Polk Monitor Series
I am in the process of upgrading my HT system. I currently have Polk monitor series made in 1984. It is a 3 way with one 7 or 8 inch sub, one 5 inch mid and 1 inch tweeter. It is has very good base response but the clarity of the mid's and high's are somewhat lacking. I am upgrading my reciever to ONKYO 706. Can someone reccomend which floostanding speakers I should consider. I will be using these mostly for music listening. I will not be using an amp at this time. I was considering rti a5. I would like to get the same sound as old monitor but with more clarity and same or better base response. I am new to this site and would appreciate any input.

Welcome to Club Polk.
Sounds like you have Monitor 7's. Your cheapest and best upgrade would be to upgrade the Tweeters with Polks silk dome replacements and upgrade the crossovers to new\better parts of the same values.
Your total cost would be under $200 and it would be near impossible to find better sounding speakers for the price.Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -
Thanks for the information. How does the monitor series 7 in mint condition stack up to the polk speakers of today? What model would come close to comparing with monitor 7?
