Or tube confusion....

I wish there was a forum were I could find people that have Cary V12`s

I have been wanting to retube the `ol V12 for sometime now, but I`m not sure what to do...

I remember awhile back , TroyD was telling me that Tung-sol 6550`s were the way to go....and I have been looking into it, but Tung-sol does not make EL84`s or 6922`s.

So waht do I do?
The V12 uses 12ea KT-88/6550, 2ea EL84`s and 2ea 6922`s
The Cary Pre Amp uses 4ea 6sn7`s
The Jolida CDP use 2ea 12ax7`s

That`s alot of different tubes !!

I would think that if I was to match all the tubes from the same maker, that it would sound better/more uniform....right?

With all the different tubes in the mix, the combinations are staggaring if you mix brands and/or types.

I would like to use Tung-Sol 6550`s , but what brand/type of 6922`s and EL84`s would be the ones to match them ?

I guy could go broke trying to find the "right combo"....and still not find it !!

I am using SED Winged EL34`s and JJ EL84/6922`s and while it sounds really good, I get much more power from the KT88/6550 tubes..

after reading awhile, I have found that most prefer the tubes that I have (in other types/brands of amps).

I just rolled the Pope`s out of the SLP-98 Pre , and put in a matched set of EH`s...
It`s alittle more clinical, but it does have tighter highs (crisper)

These tubes still need some break in time...we shall see
The Hytron`s (Jan) are runing in the buffer section, and they were up front previously...I like them....now !
Not so much before they had a couple hundred hours on them

The JJ 6922 are the closest to European NOS IMO.
The EH 6SN7 are very very good. Too bad I can't say the same about their X7 series.

You should have a look at the new re-issues like Mullard, Gold Lion, Tung-Sol, etc. They're getting some very good reviews.

Those are the 3 choices that I have been investigating !!

If and when funds allow, I will probably try all three....just not sure if I`m going KT-88 or 6550, or maybe EL-34`s

I am running SED "Winged" C`s (EL-34) at the moment, and they sound really good , IMO
