Front speaker placement

I have monitor 50 mains and a CS2 center up front. The center is in the middle of the entertainment center and the mains flank the TV. My listening position is 12 feet away from the TV and my mains are 5 feet apart from one another.

Is there a basic rule for how far apart the mains should be with respect to the listening distance?

I think they might be too close to one another. I estimate that when they are too close together you lose separation and when they are too far apart they would be unnatural. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
HT Setup: Onkyo 706; Rotel RB-1075; Rti A3; Csi A6; Fxi3's

2 CH: Squeezebox Touch; Dared SL-2000a; GoldenEar Triton 5 or Lsi9's; Parasound 2125; SVS SB12-NSD; Music Hall DAC 25.2

If you have surrounds the speakers don't need to be quite as far away as in a 2 channel system. You want to create approx 22-30 degree angle on each side from straight ahead to the TV. 30 degrees would form an equilateral triangle. So- 12 feet away from the front "flank" of speakers, doing some trigonometry would be a 9-14 foot spread between the speakers.
