    Anyone?

I use those clamp on shop lighs with about a 75-100watt natural light bulb.
Then use a tripod or whatever to clamp em onto.
Set camera to ISO 200 then just experiment on angle and such from there.
Not sure of your working area or lens used.
    I use a 24-70mm f2.8. with a Canon 20D.

As far as anything else I can't help ya there.

The few oils that I have are lit by track lighting. Halogen Bulbs. Friend of mine prefered individual lights per painting and uses the SL series from these guys.

That site Lighting4Art got me thinking of recessed 4" low voltage lighting, good idea? Or is it not worth the expense, or trouble?

Recessed lighting looks good, and you can aim them somewhat. My personal preference is not low voltage. I prefer line voltage with dimmers. It's mainly to create a mood with lighting. Low voltage (electronic and magnetic transformers) can buzz a little when dimmed.

Another option, would be as you suggested go with low voltage and put dimmers on the other lights in the area. The ambient light would be low and the brighter light would highlight your art pieces. If you do go low voltage and recessed, you will probably need a bulb that is pretty bright, since the distance to the art will be a few feet. Not sure if xenon bulbs are available for low voltage recessed lights. If you have a choice, consider spots over floods for more focused light on the art.

As far as installing them, they go in pretty easily. The wiring isn't too difficult if your a do it yourself kinda guy.

On a side note, while there will be some expense involved, your expenses should easily translate adding to value to the home. Most folks that walk into a home with extra lighting (recessed or track) always make positive comments about it.

Also, I should mention that this is what I was meaning when I said track lighting. Not for everyone, but cheaper than recessed and far easier to install.

    Hope that helps,
    Scott
