Had to put our old lab down Friday (Jake). He would have been 15 in May. What a great dog, heart of gold and a soul to match.

Love you buddy and Godspeed....man I miss him.

Sheesh! Putting our 15 year old lab - Rounder - down TODAY.

I feel & share your pain and will pray for you and yours.

Some say it's "only" a dog, but after 15 years, she's a member of the family.

Sorry to hear that. It's tough, but sometimes the right thing to do.

Thanks fellas for the condolences. Jakie was as big as a house, and gentle as a butterfly. He was a kind soul that loved children.

It's always hard. I had to put down my Schnauser about 3 months ago.
He was chasing a squirrel in the backyard, and took a tumble.
He broke his back, and just collapsed. We got a call from a friend of
a friend with rescued Schnauser that needed a home about a month
later. The poor dog was about a year old, and was suffering from
mal-nutrition. He has recovered nicely and is a real playful animal.

We all feel for your loss. Dogs are a pack animal, and you become part of their pack.
Hard to explain to someone that's never owned a dog.
They cry when you leave the house, and rejoice when you return.
And we all mourn their passing.

I am truly sorry for your loss. I love my dogs. It sucks that they live too short a life and it is very hard to put them down. I guess it's God's way of letting us have as many 4 legged "best friends" as possible during our lifetimes.

    A Dogs Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

Very very sorry to hear of your loss...............losing a family member is always tough..as is house training the newest family member ;) to take their place

Sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved "Jake". I can only imagine what it must feel like, luckily, I never had to do it yet. I say yet because our big boy, also named Jake (160lb Rottie) just turned 13 in Oct.

He not only survived an emergency operation last Thanksgiving nite, but the Vet told us he is very fortunate to reach his age. Apparently large dogs have a hard time making it past 8yrs. So I guess our Jake is on borrowed time & I know that the day is coming for our family. Man, I hate just thinking about it.

My condolences to you both. I'd love to get a dog, but being on the road, doing 'overnights' is tough, and wouldn't be fair to the dog.
It breaks my heart seeing all those dogs waiting to be addopted.

He looks like a great guy, Condolensces. I love retrievers- we have had a lab/golden mix, a lab/samoyed mix, and a golden. All great family dogs. We haven't had a dog for a year and a half now (living in a rental house) for the first time in our adult married lives, and it is hard. Looking forward to getting back into a house of our own and getting a new furball.

My heart goes out to you.

That sucks, Steve. Especially near the holidays.

My parents just put down the family cat the day after Thanksgiving. She just turned 16 on November 23rd. I was 15 years old when my parents got her for my brother. She was in kidney failure and completely deaf and emaciated because of it. She was hanging on and not sure why. She was in so much pain that you couldn't even touch her without her crying. It sucks to have to lose her like that but she was seriously suffering and there was nothing that could be done for her except make her comfortable.

Sorry for your loss dude. It's not easy to make the decision.
