Are there any women in Club Polk ??

No I'm not looking for a date; Happily Married pushing 30 years, but . . . .

Women just absolutely don't seem to be intrigued by high quality audio the way those of us with a bit more testosterone are. Come to think of it, I don't think there are any women in the group!

A recent rekindling of my interest in my old SDA's that I bought brand new in 1987, and a purchase of some vintage SRS 2's last month have caused a wave of expenses as I have entertained myself by bringing both pair back into the modern world.

But . . . . . . now I'm under fire.

Sonics, some new 6.5's, RDO's, Cardas etc. are turbocharging the flames.

-- The payback?
Here's how that works. Looks like if we get a tax refund, I'll be dropping that plus about 15K more into remodeling the kitchen.

-- The words I mumble to myself?
"Polk Budget for MY sanity, 2K."
"Kitchen Improvements for HER happiness, 15+K."
"Understanding those 2 amounts are EQUAL for marital bliss . . . PRICELESS!"

Sorry for venting,
Greg

Well, you're very fortunate. If you can afford $15+K on your kitchen, you should certainly be able afford a few more audio toys to listen to while your wife works some magic in the kitchen 'cause $15K ought to buy you a few years of consistent home-cooked meals.

There are about 3 regulars I can think of (and a few more that claim to be when in chat rooms). I will let you figure out who is which.

There are some predominately guy hobbies and some that are dominated by girls (with a few throwbacks on both sides).

Good luck with your search for balance,

The weird part is that I will put the same energy into the nuances of every cupboard, floor covering, countertop, etc. as I do for audio, and she will appreciate that and go for the quality. But the difference between a Sonic or a Dayton? She could care less!

Anyway, she is a GREAT cook and the 6 of us sit down together to a home cooked meal every night! I'm not complaining, just mystified by the difference in the way we are wired for sound.

Inspired... 30 years is a long time, you must be doing something right.
To answer your question, indeed there are women here. We (generally) don't get as excited about all the testing, swapping, trying out, changing, and constant tinkering (read: mess) that most of you guys so very much love. If you want to get her turned on to the -results- of all of the -hard work- you do to get the best sound, you need to drop a few keywords, hon. Telling her that the sound is going to be an amazingly accurate reproduction of the original won't get you nearly as far as telling her how much you think she'd enjoy a nice candlelight dinner with -beautiful- orchestral piano playing (on that new equipment) and how much you'd love to make that happen. You might want to throw in a few hints about how you love the artistic music of xyz, but how you'd love to be able to enjoy it fully (and might need a few little things to do so). Also, including her in the enjoyment part makes her feel like you've kept her in mind as well and that she had a -little- say in it. But i recommend most of all to reserve all your testing space to your workshop, because clutter and constant flux in the living area is going to get her a little irked; we want clean, concise and most of all -finished- things when it comes to visible areas of the house. I know it's a necessity to tweak and tone, but you don't want to have to say the dreaded words "Just a few more minutes... then you can use the TV, etc." You just have to change her ideas about the quest for the best sound, translate it if you will.

Admittedly, yes we are that complicated. I just hope that you can get her to enjoy the sound she -deserves to hear- and you don't get too much flak for it. I know I put my partner through enough and know well better than to ask her to "listen if this sounds better than that". If you play your cards right, I think you'll get the stuff you are looking for. Oh, and BTW, we bought out house -because of the kitchen- and yes, it's that important to us and you will definitely have a happier woman after that kitchen goes in. You've been married 30 years... you know that women have expensive tastes, you expect it by now, right?

    Good luck...

Perfect! And I wouldn't have thought of it on my own. This forum has become even more valuable than I originally thought because I was only thinking of the technical minutia!

    Thanks!

    Ratio remains constant !!

. . . . . this happened a few years ago when I bought my son a new pit bike (dirt bke) for just under $1K. I don't know why she blew up or how the outcome came about, but 8K later we ended up with new new 8 person hot tub that required us to upgrade to a new 300 Amp breaker panel and run new service cable all the way from the street!

    HI,

I just joined & have owned polks since the late 80's.I also now have several pairs. I've recently posted at the site also.

I'm in a speaker funk. I want a pair of 1.2's or the ones before those from 85' on up to last yr. made. I want them more for show ..not playing so a mint cabinet or close to it would be nice..even if it didn't play due to inner issues. I basically want a huge looking speaker to display in my music/video room but can't seem to find anything from the past or from today.I know the polk rti12's are like 51" but honestly, the black look isn't what I seek & the cherry has this yuk looking gray or silver mixed in.I like the looks of the rti150's but the price is out of my range. I know mirage has a really tall pair with like 10 or so drivers..I guess I want something like that but cheaper in price! Fluence has a 51" tall pair with several drivers but they're too narrow & wimpy looking. I might have to settle for a pair of polk rti-12's if prices keep going down..shipping alone is like 200.00 which prices me out.I'd still like something bigger, more drivers. Any ideas??? tinaseuser901@yah00 place.

Where are you located? Have you tried Craigslist?
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Sounds like you need a pair of SRT's but they are big and can be sourced for around $1750-USD, well worth it though, imposing yes, but sorry, black is what they are, you can paint them though.

I got my mrs a new kitchen with european brand induction hobbs ect and have had one cooked meal in the last month, still, at least I got my new amp, for that I am happy to cook, clean and work the required overtime to finance it (but dont tell her that). I have in the past played the 'fireplace' DVD on the 60" TV with a romantic dinner ect but to be honest find that constant nagging gets what I want...... She isn't into ithe HT thing in anyway, a real plug and play chick that when an upgrade happens she sits there and says what difference, I wish she shared my passion for it but different strokes for different folks and I just have to accept that.....

I was wondering the same thing not to long ago...doesn't seem like there are a lot of women in this hobby. It seems like most of the women I know don't really listen to music in the same way...it's just background noise to them...rather than sitting and intently listening to it.

So I guess what it comes down to...if you find yourself an audiophile chick...hang onto her!
