Use one or the other, but not both at the same time :)

...and then stick with the one that sounds best.

If you can use REW, it would help you determine the right crossover and if both subs will play well together. If you already have both why not give them a try.

I am also looking at sub's. Would two Mirage S8's work or two Polk 10's be a better bet?

the mirage seems much deeper, and a little more accurate. It also has little to no port noise which is a problem with the polks.

OMG !!! Sound waves from two subs, crossing in the same room???

Dr. Egon Spengler: Don't cross the streams.
    Dr. Peter Venkman: Why?
Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad.
Dr. Peter Venkman: I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad"?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Dr Ray Stantz: Total protonic reversal.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon.

I have long used two subs, one with each main speaker. With a basic stereo amp, use speaker lines from the mains to the subs. This will be subs in stereo. If one can use the subs as speaker stands for the mains, things are phase aligned. There can be nothing wrong with that.

With a system that has a sub out and no equalization, do as above.

If an equalized preamp or receiver with a sub-out, Y that to two cables, one to each sub and place the subs beside or under the mains. You may need a short Y [M-FF] cable and two sub cables that Y [M-MM]to the subs.

One sub in a random location can create phase cancellations and some base notes can simply disappear. That effect is what led me to use two subs starting almost 20 years ago. Stereo subs really do sound better than one mono sub. Dealers do not want to tell you that you would be better off with two subs as that would be a deal breaker.

I would prefer to have systems with L&R sub-outs, not a mono sub-out. With a good symphony, you can hear waves of bass energy rolling around the concert hall. That does not happen with a single sub.

I do not understand what magic a AVR does with a pre-out that would make that work better than speaker line connections. Perhaps speaker line connections for stereo subs would be better than sub out to two subs.

My stereo setup: has two Velodyne DD-12's speaker line connected [stereo subs].

Home theater: Pioneer Elite SC-05, two PSW10s, Angstrom's as mains, 4 Monitor 50's for surround and a SCi25 center. [The SCi25 may need to be upgraded at some point.]
