Picking a Sub-Woofer

I am new to the forum and have purchased off e-bay a polk surround system with RTi8 fronts, Csi5 Center, RTi4 Surrounds, and RTi6 Rears. I have never owned a real sub-woofer and would like to purchase a good one for HT mainly, but some music too. I have been reading lots of forums posts about the best sub's for around $ 500. Tops on my list are SVS, Hue, and Elemental Designs. What would be the right fit with the Polk speakers I have listed above? Room size is 13 x 17 with 8 foot ceilings and open at one end. I don't want to overspend on a sub just a good match. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I haven't purchased good audio equipment since just after college and kids or 25 years. So I have a long way to go in setting this new system up properly.

If you can wait a little bit. Epik Valor. Sealed sub for $549. Hits hard and drops low. Good for both HT and music

Thanks for pointing me at the Epic Sub. I did some online research on it and it looks good. A 15 inch driver for $ 549 is great. I see that it is a sealed sub so no ports. I have read that sealed subs can be better. Any idea when it will be available for shipping?

^^Unfortuantely, I emailed them last week, and their response was, "No idea when parts will be available" My take on that is, at least after Jan. 1st.??

I matched my Polk front (RTi100) and surround (RTi4) speakers with a Polk DSW 500 Pro subwoofer. I am VERY pleased with the results. If you shop around, you should get a decent price. I bought mine via www.amazon.com.

Thanks again for posting your thoughts. I read another post here asking for sub-woofer help and talked to a friend which has got me thinking about two subs. Looking at the Mirage Omni S8, which is a very small sub, but can be bought for around 200. The reviews I have read are all very positive. In addition, after hooking up my Rti6's and listening to some good music, I want a sub with better music characteristics over HT. Plus I can buy just one S8 and see how it sounds first. If I don't think two of them will do the job in my HT room I could use the S8 upstairs in a new music 2 channel system. Any thoughts?

BTW, I also e-mailed Epik about the Valor and got the same response, that they have no idea on when it may be available.
