Learning how my room works

I've been in this house almost seven years now. It was clear where the gear and speakers would go when I was looking at the house before I bought it. It's all still there. Now 7 bass traps and 4 other panels later the SDA's sound much better and the image is bigger and better. I also use two mattresses at first reflection points, they work great! I have to move one trap in place each listening session as it corners up to a door/wall. I use the same disc when I start listening to verify my balance is good. One track has outdoor sounds with a bird first on the right then the left. The left side is always harder to make as "big" or "wide" as the right due to my crazy asymmetric room.
I just got my 2500A back from CJ after a repair and hooked it up. Listening tonight the "bird" was far right but the left was close to the speaker. I found after years of tinkering that its usually something "off" on the right side (reversed phase left channel info) not the left. It was on the right, and I replayed the "bird" and it was far left as it should be. This just goes to show another way how the room is so important as is learning how your room works.
I am a firm believer in putting SDA's on the longer wall of a rectangular room. I have to in my room now but I felt this way before. I'm a nearfield listener too, less chance for the room to screw things up. When I see SDA's in a room one, two or three feet from the side walls I cringe! My room is 30 feet wide and my speakers are about 6 feet apart and I hear info all the way into the left and right corners, over 12 feet outside of the speakers. This configuration allows that. Try SDA's outdoors with no walls and you really flip out, talk about a big image.... So if you have yours on the short wall try the long one if you can.
