I recently learned how to file share from my PC to my PS3 and now all our music which is on the PC can now be played on my PS3.

Did you download the update for it? there's an add on for it. Everything i've ever seen said the newer systems dont have that chip, some can play a few on an emulator basically, but not all old games. and that you can download that add on for all but the 40gb. i tried installing it on my friends 40gb system and then tried playing a few different ps2 games and it said unsupported data type1993 Ford Ranger super cab:

I never intentionally downloaded anything that said it was an update that would allow me to play PS2 games, but I have always downloaded the updates as they become available, so it is possible it was in one of those.HT Rig

I may have missed it, but I didn't see Gran freaking Turismo metioned!!!!! It's only one of the most awesome racing games ever? Alot of people don't like it because it's too realistic and hard. Just my 2 cents. A good fun dowload is high velocity bowling, but you WILL have a sore shoulder after the first day you get it:DSony 40" LCD

When did you buy yours? I think there are 80gb models that are backward compatible with ps2 games- those are the older models from back when they were selling the motorstorm and mgs4 bundles.
From what I understand, this is how it went. As someone mentioned- the old 20 and 60gb models had the emotion engine chip that allowed for hardware based backward compatibility. Then they updated to the 40 and 80gb model which both lost the chip, but the 80 had software based emulation (through a download?), and the 40 lacked backward compatibility altogether. Then to cut costs even more they started producing a new 80gb model which was more like the 40gb model -smaller cpu, no card slots and removed the ability for ps2 backward compatibility (but I think all are still ps1 backward compatible). Unless they were able to add it back with a new firmware update, you might just have one of those older 80gb models. -

You are correct, but for some reason the 20gb and 60gb still do not play 100% of the PS2's games and the emulated 80gb only plays around 90%. There is a site to check: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus. I don't think they can add software emulation with a firmware update either.
They have done a lot to reduce the cost lately. I'm glad I got the 60gb when it was available.
I also second rallyshark. If you like racing games Gran Turismo is the best one ever made.7.1 HOME THEATER:

Yeah, my 80GB is one of the Motostorm bundle ones from back in the day. My other 2 PS3's are 60GB models that are backwards compatible, so I guess I got lucky.HT Rig

you have 3 ps3's?! Looking to let any of your 60gb's go at a good price?

Lol, I can thank my very generous wife for that, and the fact that my 17 yr old son and my 15 yr old son are incapable of sharing, lol. One of them is broke and waiting to get sent back to get fixed and we just got the other one back from the "shop" My 80GB still works like a champ though (knock on wood) lol.HT Rig

Yeah, I hear that- my 40gb ps3 stopped being able to read blu-rays during the SAME week my 360 got the rrod (after surviving waaay longer than everyone else I knew...). Had them both in the shop at the same time...what a boring few weeks!
I've always thought about getting a 60 gb, but I wasn't sure about how those older models would hold up. I have a lot of old ps2 games I still like though, so it would make a good bedroom system while also adding blu-ray in there. -
I don't regret buying the PS3 as my Blu-Ray and IMHO for what it does it is the best deal going for a blu ray playing device. You get video games, media center, storage device, internet browser and a blu-ray player for under $500. Just hope it doesn't make me eat my words, lol. (knocks on wood again)HT Rig

QFT. It's essentially a blu ray player with free game system included
