PSW10 vs Competition

I hate posting stuff that could be somewhat anti-Polk, but if there's one area where people here tend to prefer other brands it is for the sub. I'm a polk-head through and through, but have bought polk more for the detail in the mid-upper end, for 2-channel setups and sound recording.

I've also never bought a real sub before (have a cheesy one that came with a 5.1 all-in-one thing) so honestly I'm a blank slate here.

I'm seeing similar prices on the PSW10 for Around $100 shipped and the same for what appears to be a clone of the Energy ESW-10 from a place called thespeakercompany.com. The ESW clone is here...

I've read good things about this one elsewhere and about the Energy that it is a clone of. I will say this, it has more power than the Polk Sub for the same $$, goes a little lower, plus I can return it for no cost shipping if I don't like it. I am worried though that in the meantime the $99 Polk deals (w/out free return shipping) will dry up.

I'm really torn on this one and money is tight for me.

Thanks in advance for any input.

One more thing to note: I am putting this in a room with carpet where a 10" is probably the right size (don't know if that impacts down-firing vs front-firing). I may move this to a room with hardwood floors, but not likely. Also, I don't need to shake the house. I'm likely going to use this more with music than home theatre, but solid marks in both movies and music is a plus.

I love Polk very, very much,I have RTi10's for the front CSi4's for the rear and CSi3 for the center soon to be replaced with CSiA6, when I had the PSW10 hooked up to this setup it was like it wasn't even there this sub would be great with HTIB speakers but that's it. Polk is not known for they're subs, I'm going with HSU, SVS also makes great subs,I could help you more with your choice if I knew what speakers you have.

I am not very happy with my PSW10... Then again it came free with my other Polk speakers.

For music, does not hit very hard and not very tight...

For HT, it's better... Again not very tight but it shows up when it needs to. I first tested it in HT when I picked up Ironman on Blu-Ray, some scenes with a bunch of explosions sounded horrible... PSW10 could not keep up at all.

Again, it was free for me and it prevented me from having to shell out $$$ for a better sub at the time. I am not sure I would ever PAY for one...

It sounds good for the $100 price range. I got mine for free and used it before my dsw500 came. I'm still testing that one out, btw. For $100 I think you'll like it.

I just tried it out last night against my other low end sub, it sounded very close to the same after swapping it back and forth lots. It performed fine for entry level so for $100 it will do the job. I will be bringing mine back since I don't feel like paying for a lateral move :p But if I had no sub I would have kept it for my little room.
