Well I am trying to trim down my costs here, and I am looking for a cheap way to have a phone with free long distance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ben

Yes, using it and it works fine. They only problem is, you have to wait till mid 2009 before you can transfer your present number. Right now, you use the number that is built into the device. The great thing is that it is super portable. Any where you go (that has internet) you have your home phone with you with unlimited calling.

Never used that service, but I have been using Vonage for 3-4 years now-no problems. I'm on the 500 minute Basic plan for about $18 per mo. Unlimited is about $25.
Only catch is that you have to have broadband internet access.
Same deal with Vonage-you're # follows you with the device.
    I sent you a referral ;)

I am kinda Leary about MJ. I see a lot of reviews going both ways. It looks like it does not like Vista(I don't either), but works well with XP. Also the CS sucks, but for $20 a year if it works most of the time who cares? Also I have heard many stories of people being over charged. I think I may try it with a virtual CC # so they don't have unlimited access to my funds.

I believe one catch with this and Vonage is they do not provide 911 emergency service, as they are not REQUIRED to by our fine legislators (I believe).

911 works thru any land line - reguardless of a service provider.

Ding. I don't even have phone service at my house (just use my cell phone) but I still keep a corded phone hooked up to the dead land line because 911 (in theory) still should work. So anyone with any of those IP-based phones, I'd keep a phone hooked up to the standard telephone company wiring for 911 use.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Actually only the County/City provides emergency service and call centers, not the Phone company-not even Verizon. But that doesn't mean that dialing 911 won't work to the same end from an IP based service. I'm sure there's a ton of info out there on exactly why Verizon, etc can offere direct E911 service but not the VoIP providers, I just haven't looked to hard into it.

    See here for details

I have called 911 a few times via the Vonage service and every times it worked fine. You only have to register your home address (that the device will be operating) and Vonage is on you with constant reminders until you do.

When you call 911 on the cell or use OnStar you don't talk directly to your local 911 call center either, but you still get help.
