hey guys, i put this question here instead of the sub section because its not about tweaking a sub, but selection of the correct sub for my system.
I'm getting a Cambridge 740A and a pair of b&w 684's. i went to the store and tried them out, compared them to some lsi9's, and like these ones. But they are a little weak on the bass. In about a month I'm gonna go out and get a sub, but i was wondering what would be a good sub for what i want. I don't listen to rap or hip hop, i don't want an obscene vibrating box messing up the clarity and complexity of my system, which i think sounds great. But something to make it a bit fuller. The 684's have a 1'in tweeter, and a pair of 6.5'in cones. One is designated for bass, and the other is for mids and bass. It sounds good, but i want to thicken it up. Something with a fast response time and that will not over power the 684's, but enhance them. Sorry if i sound picky, lol. Anyone have an idea of what i should be looking into?
Project Debut Carbon, Ortofon 2M Red cartridge.
Cambridge Audio 740a, only using preamp section.
Parasound HCA 2200 mk2.
Dahlquist DQ10's, passive dahlquist crossover @ sub.

Most anything by Martin Logan, Totem or REL. I've also heard the new Polk subs are a good bang for the buck.

Have you checked out some of the internet direct retailers? You can usually get a lot more sub for your money.

To complete the spectrum of frequencies without messing with the sonic quality that you already have? I'd check out the Polk Audio DSW lineup. Polk has come a long way with their subs and they are definitely worthy of your consideration.

hey guys, thanks for the info. After thinking about it, i decided to upgrade the B&W 684's to the 683's, which are a 3-way with 2 bass drivers. This should solve the problem, as they do a really good job at reproducing those lower frequencies. my budget was going to be about $300, which was the cost of the upgrade fro the 684 to the 683's.
    cheers!
