Azur 540C-Keeps ejecting

I just picked up a used Cambridge Audio Azur 540C (not V2). Except for the heavy Nicotine odor emanating from it, it appears to be in great shape. So much for a 9/10 rating

Well I just fired it up--when I put a CD in (and yes I tried a tried a few factory CDs) and press the tray "Open/Close" button, the tray goes in, waits a second or two, then opens again as if its rejecting the CD but there is no error displayed-only 'OPEN'.

However if while the tray is open I press 'Play', the CD tray closes and it plays fine.
Also if while the tray is open I press and hold the "Open/Close" button until after the tray closes, it stays closed.

Is there something wrong? Is it a known issue? Or is holding the open/close button until its closed the way its supposed to be done?

Thanks

Since you said this is a cigarette stinker, one possibility is the touch button for tray eject is a little dirty (with tar/nicotine residue) and it is sensing two pushes when you try to close it. It processes this as close, open. The fact that it works properly when you press play is encouraging. Might try to take it apart and clean everything out. I like to use isopropyl to clean those contacts thoroughly. Might help you get rid of the smell too.

EDIT: Does this unit have a remote? If so, does the remote have an eject/close button and if so, does the unit have the same problem when using the remote?

If its remote capable and you have a universal remote, I'd try to use that and see what happens.

Either way, it could either reinforce my theory or disprove it without having to disassemble the player.

thanks--I'll try that tomorrow-It does have a remote-I never thought of it. I did think it might be a stuck button, but I'm not so sure. When its closed and I press it to eject, it ejects and stays open, not open then close. But I'll try the remote out tomorrow. (the set is still at the office)

Yeah this thing needs a freakin bath. A good dip in something.

Well I just got an email back from the seller about my not being very content about the nicotine smell, and he said he'd take them back no problem. I am actually amazed (based on my recent issues)-this is a pleasant surprise.

So yall tell me--is $350 a good deal for an Azur 540c(9/10) and Azur 640A (6/10) should I attempt to clean these things up and keep them or send them back and look for a cleaner set?

I quit smoking over 10 years ago so I'm a bit sensitive to the nasty smells of nicotine. Even some of my smoker officemates noticed the smell when they came into my office-and they just got back from a smoke break.

Yeah I was thinking I should just open the tray and spray Fabreze right in there huh? I heard it can do wonders for improving the laser as well.

I'd keep them. Sounds like a pretty good deal on the amp/cd combo. As far as the smell, I'd just clean the outside surfaces really good to start. After that, the amps cooling fins usually hold a lot of smell. Get in between them good.

I just paid $450 for a 9/10 540A and 9/10 540C, so it would appear you got a good deal.

Just curious, why such a low rating on the 640A though?

Well the seller rated it a strong 7.5-8, but I was being more conservative and rating it according to the Agon scale. It has some pretty long scratches on the top, but the front face plate looks fine except for some imperfections on the Volume dial as well one of the buttons is sticking. Maybe its not as bad as I think. I guess the only thing I'll see is the front panel anyway.

Oddly enough, the CD tray is working fine today-perhaps the button is just sticky with nicotine. Maybe I'll keep 'em and give em a good cleaning.

For CD's just my Pio Elite DV-46AV. Mainly for SACD.
Otherwise I've been using a SB Duet mostly.

I am on the preorder list for the new Emo CDP even though it won't do SACD :(

i actually sell vintage electronics for a living. and as bad as it may sound..... on some old units..... alll u need to do is flip/push the button/switch a bunch of times and the connections will clean up well enough to run. as far as the smell.... get one of those bounce sheets for the dryer and leave it in there a couple days. that should really help.

    Hmm, not a bad idea.
I'll take em apart to give 'em as good a cleaning as I can to at least get any layered nico off.

    Thanks

Haven't gotten to the point of cleaning or deodorizing this yet, but I wanted to mention a portion of the seller's response after I mentioned the odor and sticking buttons.
...If you get to the point where it is not worth it to you to go thru them and
clean them, I want you to know my offer to buy them back still stands and
    will continue to stand.
I would refund all your $$, plus the shipping charges.
Stereo gear should be a pleasure to own and operate and should not irritate
you every time you use it, so if this is going to be a thorn in your side,
please let me know and I will gladly Paypal you whatever it will take to buy
    it back.
    :eek::eek::cool::cool::cool:

Anyway, I am truly impressed by the willingness of this seller to make it right. I never asked to return it-I only made my concerns (no demands) known. It was completely his offer. My faith has been somewhat renewed by this action.
I've decided that I'm going to keep them anyway and just try to clean them up to my satisfaction.
