Dude, HD-DVD lost the format war back last January when Warner Bros decided to go Blu exclusive. It was just a matter of time after that. Toshiba officially gave up on the technology sometime in the spring. There haven't been any new (or old) movies released on HD-DVD format since early summer. Its a completely DEAD format. You can still get some cheap movies on the format (from places like Inetvideo.com), but for the most part, all the movies are gone from the stores as well.

I happen to be holding onto about 30 movies in HD-DVD format, most of which I purchased for $5-$10. For that reason, I have a dual format player that can play Blu and HD-DVD, but that is only because it also happens to be an outstanding upscaling DVD player and is quite a capable Bluray player as well.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

the war is over and bluray won. but toshiba and the stores still need to clear out inventory and they're doing it at giveaway price so it may be worth it to buy the HDDVD player for like $45 with 2 movies and stock in those HDDVDs for movies that are available on both HDDVD+Bluray. It's cheaper that way.

    I have Toshiba HD-XA2 HD-DVD player.
1). This player has a Reon chip for upconversion of standard DVDs, which is awesome!
2). HD-DVD titles are $5-10 each - I have ~50 of those, mostly bought after HD-DVD lost the war.
3). HD-DVD is region free, so I have titles from UK, Japan, Germany, Australia and other countries (basically, you can only get these titles on BluRay now days).

Before the war was lost/won I had an Xbox HD-DVD player and 3 titles.
After the defeat, I bought a Toshiba HD-A3 for about $40 (actually I picked up 2) and then started to rack up about 30-40 titles from $5-$10 ea. I figured they were the same price or cheaper than thier Reg DVD counterparts and a better picture to boot. I don't have much time for watching movies so these will last me a long time. Its not like the discs will expire or anything.

And as said the players will also upconvert reg DVDs as well. Although I use the Pio DV-48AV most of the time since its faster and upconverts to 1080p where my HD-A3 only goes to 1080i.

There are still quite a few titles still available on the cheap for HD-DVD but of course nothing new will be released so that really is the only negative (for me)

    Phasearray: HD-DVD isn't dead, it's just resting.

Entire Polk Forum: Look, matey, we know a dead format when we see one...

Please don't make me post the rest of the Monty Python "Dead HD-DVD" sketch. :)

The next DVD format is scheduled for March 2010. Every BD player is programmed to stop working during that month, forcing you to buy the next greatest DVD format. All your base belongs to us.

Actually... the BD spec allows for players to be remotely disabled if "invalid" software or hardware configurations are present. As far as I'm aware no company actually has this implemented and I doubt any will (so no conspiracy theories please).

Ahhh, I so miss the format war threads, they were so much fun.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.
