Cleaning preamplifier potentiometers?

Is there a guide out there somewhere for those of us who want to begin maintaining our own equipment? Has anyone ever published a diy manual? The web is full of varying recommendations about cleaning pots and switches.
Which products are safest and easiest to use for cleaning pots? If deoxidation is also necessary, which products can be used without damaging the electronics and don't leave a residue? If a deoxidizer is used, should it be followed up with a cleaner again? My initial task will be cleaning up a Nikko Beta 40 preamp.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions. This preamp pushes a Marantz 140 amp and then Polk SDA 2B's.
