There's no amount of money that could get me to go see the circus and Bozo the clown.

BTW, there are no hotel rooms left within a few hours drive, maybe more.

Make sure they are not fake. They are printed but from what I have been told, will not be released till very close to the day to prevent scalpers.

If it were me I would stay as far away from the Mall that day as I could. Predictions are anywhere from 2-4 million. That would pack the mall with wall to wall people.Sorta like a soccer match in the UK on a much larger scale. Ever see a crush injury from one of those? The METRO is even telling people to walk as they will not be able to transport that many people.

Jesse I am closer and mine can be had for $5000 a night 4br and only 26 miles to the mall time wise on that day about 12hrs:eek: I will be on call 24/7 for the whole week:(

    Good luck on your adventure

And to think I used to have an appartment on P street and 33rd! I used to walk to the Mall just for the fun of it (on the path, down by the Potomac). I could have left town for the WE and rented it out for the price of some new gear!

    Wow, that's not bad.

Seriously though, if I'm hard up I know a few people who will let me pitch a tent in the back yard.

From what I hear, people will be getting there in the afternoon the day before, tossing blankets out, and waiting over night in the freezing weather.

There is not enough money or perks to entice me to attend this event. I won't even watch it on TV. What a waste of time, money and resources. It's all a joke IMO. I would feel exactly the same way if McCain had won.

Have fun! Lots to see. Museums are free! Metro is cheap. If you can, try to book some Gray Line tours. http://www.grayline.com/Grayline/destinations/us/washingtondc.go

    1. Mount Vernon/Old Town Alexandria was cool. Don't spend too much time in the house, though. The town was very interesting.
    2. Washington After Dark is pretty. They take you to many of the memorials. The Korean memorial at night is very haunting. Alas, it's a bit of a whirlwind tour though and I felt rushed.
    3. Monticello is very cool.
    4. I am not a Civil War fan but the Gettysburg tour blew me away. Highly recommended. Felt rushed but that's because it would probably take 3 days to see it all.

    Other thoughts
    1. If you want to see the Washington Monument from the top, get there early. It's free but when I got in line to get my ticket at 9:30AM, the first available was at 1PM.
    2. There are two Smithsonian Air and Space. The newest one is the Udvar-Hazy Center and it contains the bigger, badder stuff like the Space Shuttle. I think they've stopped giving rides from the A&S to the UHC. Google for more details. I've missed the UHC, twice. Argh. http://www.nasm.si.edu/UdvarHazy/
    3. There are two White House tours. The first one is a public tour that you have to stand in a 5 mile line to get in. The second is a private tour granted by your Senator (or someone in Congress). West Wing and second floor off limits. Background check is extensive but it's the better tour to take and it includes a tour of the Capital building (thx John Cornyn!). I was almost knocked over by John McCain underground back in 2005. He was in a hurry.
    4. Avoid the National Aquirium. It's not free and it sucks. You come thinking it'll be something like the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago but instead it's a bunch of little tanks in the basement of one of the buildings.
    5. We did not rent a car. The Metro took us almost everywhere and we walked the rest of the way.

    Have fun!

I was accepted in my request for tickets but they were out. As a result of being out of inagural tickets they offered me the more expensive upgraded tickets to see Jerry Springer. Of course I jumped all over this offer. I'm always into better entertainment packages.

Tickets to see a President sworn in......hmmmmm.

I don't care how long they've been doing it, it still just doesn't seem right.

Where does that money "SUPPOSEDLY" go?

I don't know how they could calculate the cost of this with all the planning committee's that have been meeting since SEPT 08. If a mass evacuation is needed this is the last place I want to be. You are right we could to a lot with the time, money and resources.

    WooHoo!

    Had a great time!

Free parking smack in the middle of the city for three days, plus a free place to stay, and all the free coffee I could drink!

Whole trip for sunday, monday, tuesday, wed morning cost me about $60 !!

Here is a picture from my viewpoint. Standing right by Grants Memorial. We could look back at the mall and see the 1+ million people packed in like sardines, ouch.

One picture is looking at cap building, one is turned around looking back at the mall.

I had no interest in the inaguration... but the thought of all those people huddled together, shivering, got me thinking... I wonder if body heat and expelled air were enough to warm that area up at least a degree that day. That's a lot of 98.6* bodies in there!
    Ludicrous gibs!

    Killer pictures, wizzy.

Glad you had a good time. Did you get a chance to check anything cool out while you were up? The World War II memorial is my favorite.

The thought of being in that crowd makes me want to run away screaming. I'd have to be on drugs.

it is amazing to look at though. The Boston Globe's "Big Picture" blog has some great shots as well (as they always do) : http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/01/the_inauguration_of_president.html

So the tickets were "FREE", depends on what you think free is. It was the most expensive inauguration EVER!!!

Glad you had a great time at the "Grand Illusion", seriously.

I can't get involved with this charade or I'll get myself banned.

I know we are by no means the only country to have a peaceful transfer of power but it always makes me feel extra proud of being an American when I see so many gathered to watch it happen, the new President take office and then get down to business.

I figure it's not my job to monitor such trivial crap. And all I did was express my opinion(after all it's still sort of America) and was not sarcastic about being happy he had a great time, just glad I wasn't there. I wouldn't have been there even if the other had one.

    Now go watch LOTR.:D
